Flamenco. This is a song , music and dance style. Strongly influenced by the Gitanos. Flamenco culture originated in andalusia. At the time of the Spanish Inquisition, 1499, Moors, Gitanos and Jews were fleeing Spain.

  5. At the time of the Spanish Inquisition, 1499,Moors, Gitanos and Jews were fleeing Spain.

  6. It was in this socially and economically difficult situation that the musical cultures of theMoors, Jews and Gitanos startedto form the basics of flamenco music.

  7. The first time flamenco is mentionned in literature : Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso 1774

  8. Between 1869-1910, flamenco music developed rapidly in music cafés called cafés cantantes.

  9. A flamenco singer is known as a cantaor (male) or cantaora (female)

  10. A dancer is a bailaor/a

  11. Most of the songs and dances are performed to the guitar of the tocaor/a

  12. Percussion in flamenco is provided by stamping feet …

  14. And sometimes castanets.

  15. Traditional flamenco costumes :

  16. For women : - the shawl - the fan

  17. - the long, frilly bata de cola dress

  18. For men: - flat Cordoban hat - and tight blacktrousers

  19. There are several main song types :

  20. The highly popular sevillana dance, learnt by girls all over the country, is not flamenco at all. The sevillana is probably an Andalucian version of the seguidilla, a Castilian folk dance.
