  1. Chapter 8 Other Road Users It is important for a motorist to remember that he/she is not the only one using the roadways.

  2. Pedestrians • Second largest category of MV deaths/injuries in NJ. • Motorists are prohibited from blocking the crosswalk when stopped at a red light/stop sign. • Watch for signs that mark special hazard zones, such as school zones, bus stops, playgrounds, parks, where children are most likely to play or cross streets.

  3. MATURE DRIVERS (55+) • Normal physical changes are part of the aging process. (vision, hearing, reaction time, flexibility) • Can follow some important tips: choose time/road best suited for driving ability, stay alert, share driving time with another person, keep license current, annual vision check-ups, medication effects, etc.

  4. Motorcycles • Same laws governing cars also govern motorcycles. • Never follow too closely (slippery roads, objects on roadway) • Failure to detect recognize in traffic is the most common cause of collisions

  5. Trucks, Tractor-trailers, Buses • Many limitations regarding visibility, stopping distances, maneuverability. • Several no-zones (blind spots): Rear, front, side, and head on no zones

  6. Mopeds • May not exceed 25 mph • Must follow all traffic signs and signals and drive on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic. • Always be alert for mopeds; smaller than motorcycles and harder to see.

  7. Bicycles, Skateboards, Inline skates • Leave plenty of room when following/passing. • Have same rights as a moving MV. • After dark, bikes must have front/rear lights and a rear reflector.

  8. Motorists Must Yield To: • Visually Challenged People crossing any highway or intersection • Bicyclists, Skateboarders, In-line Skaters • Don’t follow motorcycles or moped too closely • Be aware of trucks on the road and their respective blind spots
