  1. Haggai 1:1-12 An Improper Focus

  2. Timeline 960 Solomon’s Temple Built 931 Solomon Dies 930 Rehoboam is King --- Kingdom Splits 722 Northern Kingdom Defeated by Assyrians 586 Southern Kingdom Defeated by Babylonians • Jews Exiled & Solomon’s Temple Destroyed 539 Cyrus (Medo-Persians) Take Babylon • Cyrus Allows Jews to Return to Jerusalem and Orders the Rebuilding of the Temple 520 The Ministry of Haggai

  3. Haggai 1:1,2 Haggai 1:1-2 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the Lord.”

  4. An Improper Focus Haggai 1:3-4 Then the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?”

  5. The Jews Upon Return… Were given freedom and were… comparatively affluent and at peace They were comfortable and focused on maintaining their own comfort

  6. What They Forgot… Ezra 1:2-4 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The Lord, the God of heaven, has … charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah…. 3 Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the Lord”

  7. The Jews, Upon Return… Felt that they knew what was best for them… comfort, freedom to do as they pleased… and failed to realize that what they REALLY NEEDED was what God had commanded them to do To Worship

  8. To Not Build the Temple… Was essentially denying the need for God God’s Agenda God’s Blessings in their life

  9. They Chose… Their own agenda over … the agenda God told them was in their best interests Their own judgment over God’s Judgment

  10. Why? a self-serving attitude distractions leaning on their own understanding Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding

  11. Closer to Home…. Do we do the same thing?

  12. God’s Blessings…. Haggai 1:5-7 Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. 6 You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways.”

  13. What God Reminds Us of… even in abundance we are unfulfilled if… what we pursue is self serving

  14. The Pro-Active Lesson Haggai 1:8-9 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord. 9 You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.

  15. The Pro-Active Lesson Haggai 1:10-11 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11 And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”

  16. God is Moving His People to … John 21:15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

  17. The Big Picture We are prone to follow our own agenda We are prone to follow our own counsel Both lead to self servitude and… everyone suffers

  18. The Big Picture God uses means to move our hearts to… Worship of God and… the service of others

  19. All This Shows God to Be… Loving… For He sends Prophets… and the Prophetic Word Praise Him!
