  1. Ambition in Action

  2. Head Teachers’ ForumMark HowlandR/Institute Director30 May 2012

  3. State of PlayInvestment Funding

  4. State of Play National • TAFE SA established as a Statutory Authority. Funding model migrating. Rent on premises, course offerings reviewed. • Victoria – what do you say?! Huge changes with a big impact on TAFE provision. • TAFE loadings have discontinued. • Merger of Canberra Institute of Technology and Canberra University on hold?? • Holmesglen and Metropolitan South Institute - alliance to offer two degrees. • Victoria University to commence a “bold and exciting”restructure including integrating vocational and higher education faculties, removal of low demand courses and partners sought for offshore student enrolments.

  5. State of Play NSW • Philosophy to offer essential services or value adding services. Otherwise, encourage market forces to determine equilibrium ie contestability, entitlements, user choice. • Economics 101 - Fiscal reality of sluggish national economy resulting in GST $5.4 billion black hole. State facing downgrading of its AAA rating (cost extra $2 billion pa). • NSW’s AAA will be maintained. • Expenditure substantially reduced. • Timing – Budget 12 June. Impact?

  6. State of Play Sydney Institute • Paradigm has changed, not is changing. We cannot respond to changes the way we have historically. Failure to embrace will result in commercial and functional failure. • Need to be Faster, Harder, Smarter Faster • urgencyis needed (customer comes first) to product development (SI is behind) • Streamlining of internal policy and procedures Harder • need to consider every aspect of operation (client centric approach) • From first point of contact, to the learning experience, to completion and beyond. Examples of excellence - individual and sectoral and at all employment levels. • Cultural renewal and shift

  7. State of Play Smarter • India 20 years ago - only the lucky few had TVs, now 950 million have mobiles, 150 million use the internet. Users are demanding connectivity. • New products and initiatives, including new channels and delivery cycles. We need to “own” this space. SEEK already has lead but is not unassailable. • Mobile and Online marketing and purchasing –failure to embrace results in decline of icon brands (retail sector is an example). SI is an icon. • Branding uniformity across all materials – marketing, teaching materials etc. Not an option. Brand audit currently being undertaken. • SI should have its own FUTURE fund. Philosophy of $1 must equal $1.20 • TAFE Radio • Student accommodation • Product development • Business development

  8. Investment Funding • In line with our strategic directions, approved projects support: • people • customers • business systems and processes • to increase our: • products and services • business sustainability

  10. Investment Funding Examples • Sustainability • Course development • Investment to reduce carbon footprint • TAE recognition process • Currently 365 teachers about to undertake recognition process – more to follow! • Promotional capability to ensure market share • Website redevelopment • TAFE Radio project • Social media campaigns
