The arrangement of letters, numbers, and special function keys that act as the primary input device for a computer. Letters, numbers, and symbols entered into a computer for processing. The case that holds the power supply, central processing unit, storage devices, and all circuit boards. Area of the computer that temporarily holds data waiting to be processed, stored, or output.

  4. Hard Drive (Disk) The main storage location for a computer that is mounted inside the computer’s system unit. Key Word: Mounted Inside Can store millions of bytes of data. Stated in some form of bytes. M. Guymon - Pleasant Grove High – Fall 2006

  5. Magnetic Storage The recording of data onto disks or tape by magnetizing particles of an oxide coating. Key Word: Oxide This is a fairly permanent type of storage that can be easily modified. M. Guymon - Pleasant Grove High – Fall 2006

  6. Floppy Disk A type of magnetic storage that uses a round piece of flexible plastic covered with a thin layer of oxide and sealed inside a protective covering.   8. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Ports An external interface for communication between a computer and peripheral devices over a single data line at very high speeds.   10. Optical Storage Means of reading and recording data as light and dark spots on CD and DVD. Key Word: Light and dark Reading and recording are done through a low-power laser light. M. Guymon - Pleasant Grove High – Fall 2006

  11. CD-ROM “Compact Disk – Read Only Memory” Also called CD-R for CD-Read. Storage device that uses laser technology to read data permanently stored on compact disks, cannot be used to write data to a disk. Key Word: Laser technology Most common size is 650 megabytes.   12. CD-RW “Compact Disk-Read Write” A storage device that reads data from compact disks, but also has the ability to write data to compact disks. Key Word: Write data The writing to the compact disk is done through a process called burning. Most common size is 650 megabytes. Operating System • Master controller for all activities that take place within a computer; the collection of software that directs a computer's operations. • Key Word: Master Controller • The Operating System has the following jobs • To interact with application software, device drivers, and hardware to manage the computer’s resources. • To monitor itself in order to function efficiently. • To ensure that input and output proceed in an orderly manner.

Platform • Underlying hardware and software of the computer system. • Key Word: Underlying • Hardware Platform • A group of compatible computers that can run the same software. • Software Platform • A major piece of software, such as an operating system, in which application programs can be designed to run. • Two popular platforms • PC (IBM compatible) • Mac

  17. Multitasking • Running more than one program at a time. • Key Word: More than one • Examples • Using Word to type your Drill while the printer is finishing a print job. • Using the Internet while Word is saving a document.

  18. Graphical User Interface • A user interface that features on-screen objects, such as menus and icons that are manipulated by a mouse. • Key Word: Manipulated • Abbreviation is written “GUI” • Abbreviation is pronounced “gooey”.

  19. Encryption • The manipulation or modification of data to prevent accurate interpretation by all but those for whom the data is intended. • Key Word: Prevent • Financial institutions use encryption to increase the security of data transmitted over the Internet.

  20. Program • The precise step-by-step instructions enabling a computer to solve a problem. • Key Word: Step-by-step

Application Software • A computer program designed to carry out specialized tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, slide shows, or electronic mail. • Key Word: Carry out • Shareware • Computer program that is freely distributed for a trial period, such as 30 days, and then the user must pay a fee to continue using the program. • Key Word: Trial period

Network Use Definitions • Drive • A location on a network that is set aside for the collection of data. • Key Word: Location • Examples • Your H:/Drive. • My I:/Drive. • Folder • The subdirectory or subdivision, of a drive that can contain files and/or other folders. • Key Word: Subdirectory • Examples • We will create a folder called CTech. • Inside CTech we will create folders for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • File • A named collection of data that exists on a storage device. • Key Word: Collection • Examples • Your daily drills. • The files you will create in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
