  1. Hello. I’m Chris Phillips and I’ve been teaching at EIT for the past year. I’ve done lots of travelling in my short life but my move to the Bay from Auckland has been the best yet. Sun and laidback sophistication, the Bay has everything I could want in a lifestyle. Many years ago I lived for three years in Papua New Guinea, just north of Australia. This was wild jungle country, but the beaches—fine white sands and sapphire blue waters full of tropical fish to swim amongst, as well as the sharks. A few years ago I was lucky enough to go to China and teach at a foreign trade school in Dalian. This was a traditional Chinese education system, and on weekends I’d go out with other teachers to remote country schools and teach oral English to children and teens. Shhh ... there’s a group of children in northern China who can say “b*##ar” in a Kiwi accent! The temperature was 0 degrees and the whiteboard was too high to reach and the marker was wearing thin, and all I could say was the “b” word, and sure enough, the children were saying it too. My heart is still in China, but for now, I’m enjoying my job at EIT meeting interesting students from faraway places, and I look forward to seeing you in my class.
