  2. High School Application Participation A higher percentage of students participated in the high school choice process this year than in the prior three years. Note: The percent participation increases even though the applications decrease because the number of 8th graders this year dropped by about 400 district-wide (primarily due to birth rate).

  3. Schools of Choice More of our schools are becoming schools of choice, with 76% of students making a choice receiving their first or second choice. *A second choice process supported 15% of students that did not receive a choice during the initial choice process. 10/26/09

High School Choice Process High School Choice Process: • High School Choice Guide: Each 8th grade student will receive a guide and it will be available online. • School Counselor/Principal Designee: Each student participates in a counseling session with their school counselor or principal designee about high school choice. • High School Fair: Each 8th grade student is invited to attend Great Choices, Great Futures High School Fair on November 21, 2009 to find out more information about schools. • Open Houses: Available at the various High Schools through the months of October, November and December. • High School Choice Application: Submitted to school counselor, principal designee or Office of Student Placement by December 18, 2009.

Great Choices, Great Futures High School Fair • Invited: All 8th Graders • When: November 21, 2009 • Where: Poly-Western Complex • Time: 9:00am-2:00pm • All 8th graders will be provided transportation via home school. • Each Baltimore City High School will be represented at the High School Fair.

  7. High School Guide The high school guide, distributed to every 8th grade student in City Schools includes: • Application Timeline. • Open House Schedule. • Map of Schools. • Alphabetical Listing of Each School. • Academics: School self-description, Course and program highlights, Academic services, Extracurricular activities, Partnerships. • Demographics: Address, Bus Routes, Principal, Contact Information, Grades, Enrollment, Uniform description, and school type. • Entrance Criteria for Schools and Programs. • Graduation Requirements. • Frequently Asked Questions.

  8. Key Changes in High School Choice • City schools will use 7th grade MSA scores as part of composite score. • Terra Nova will only be used by Office of Achievement and Accountability for students from non-public or non-Maryland schools who do not have 7th grade MSA scores.

Dates To Remember • November 11, 2009: Professional Development for School Counselors or School Designees on High School Choice • November 12, 2009: Release of High School Guide • November 21, 2009: Great Choices, Great Futures High School Fair • December 18, 2009: High School Choice Applications Due to School Counselors, School Designees and OSP • March 1, 2010: Placement decision mailed to students and parents 10/26/09
