  1. Brain waves! By: Anthony Pestano

  2. Introduction • In year 6 we have been studying the brain so right now I will tell you all the information year 6 knows about the brain.

  3. Neurons • The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Cells of the nervous system, called nerve cells or neurons, are specialized to carry "messages" through an electrochemical process. The human brain has approximately 100 billion neurons. • Neurons come in many different shapes and sizes. Some of the smallest neurons have cell bodies that are only 4 microns wide. Some of the biggest neurons have cell bodies that are 100 microns wide. 1 micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimetre!

  4. Brain imformation • The human brain is like a powerful computer that stores our memory and controls how we as humans think and react. It has evolved over time and features some incredibly intricate parts that scientists still struggle to understand. • Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the body, but for reasons that are not yet fully understood, the interaction is with opposite sides, the right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body, and vice versa.

  5. A sheep's brain. • We will never forget the time when Mr Hanstock ( our teacher ) cut a real sheep's brain. The teachers asked us who would feel sick so that they could avoid it and go to the hall. • While Mr Hanstock cut the brain, we kept staring, because we were very interested like we are always in all lessons. The brain had loads of neurons and then Year 6 knew what a sheep's brain looked like and what was inside.

  6. Roles of neurons • Axon- The function of the axon is to transmit imformation to different neurons. • Myelin sheath- It is essential for the proper function of the nervous system. • Nucleus- The nucleus is the controlled centre. • Cell body- The compact area of a nerve cell that constitutes the nucleus and surrounding cytoplasm , exuding the axon and dendrites. • Dendrites- A short branched extension of a nerve cell.

  7. Examples of work We found out lots about the brain. Loads of people did not finish, so Mr Hanstock kindly let us finish it at home. This is a model of a brain that year 6 made. The one on the left was made by two other boys named Hassan and John and myself. (all of us are in 6KH).
