Lesson FifteenFactors That Affect Heart Rate Objectives • Measure resting heart rate by feeling the pulse • Determine the effect of exercise and weight on heart rate Bellwork Read Introduction and “Blue” reading on p 130-131 Define resting heart rate and pulse. (Solicit ideas about what might affect heart rate.)

  2. Getting Started (call on students to share answers) Measure your heart rate for 1 min. (Ask for answers) Is there a short cut to find “beats per minute” ? How could we find the average resting heart rate of the class? Question What affect does exercise/ weight have on heart rate? (pick one) Hypothesis If I ___________ then my heart rate will _______ because ________________ Gallon water containers (anything that add weight), stopwatch, rulers Materials

  3. Procedure Inquiry 15.1 p.133 (Can use student sheet 15.1, part1) Work as a group to design an experiment Design a data table Get it approved by the teacher (This could be day one)

  4. Results/data Complete your experiment and record in your data table Graph of group heart rates (use student sheet or graph paper) Complete Part 2 of SS 15.1 Conclusion Answer your question using your data and restate your hypothesis. Next question

Homework Answer reflection questions 4-6 in SG p 133 ( you must go over class data to make sure both weight and exercise are discussed) Read - Blood: Life’s Liquid p 134 in SG (The only place parts of blood, blood types and lymphatic system are discussed.
