  4. 1. Context: Impending SDG adoption and the Post-2015 Development Agenda In September 2015, world leaders are set to commit to poverty eradication by 2030 as part of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda SDGs likely to include a pledge, by 2030, to end poverty in all its forms everywhere, ensure lasting protection of our planet’s environment, and foster a world where no one is left behind.

Context: Impending SDG adoption and the Post-2015 Development Agenda The post-2015 development agenda acknowledges • That remarkable progress has been made on poverty reduction and the MDGs • Progress however has been uneven - with significant under-achievements on environmental sustainability (MDG 7) • The task of improving and sustaining progress on poverty eradication is expected to become harder as the impacts of climate change and ecosystems decline become more acute, with largely negative consequences predicted for a growing number of (absolutely and relatively) poor and vulnerable people in developing countries.

SDG Implementation: Anticipated challenges and lessons learned • We know that the approach cannot be piecemeal or partial or siloed since the SDGs seek impact across economic growth, poverty eradication and environmental sustainability • SDGs are anticipated to pose challenges for countries to prioritize, plan for and implement since they require an integrated approach across national planning processes • Yet, we are not starting from scratch but can build on key lessons learned from MDG implementation

SDG Implementation: Anticipated challenges and lessons learned Lessons learned show that integrated implementation approaches will not only call for “domesticating” the SDGs but also need to consider the following questions: • How to achieve commitment and coordination across sectors? • How can development actors better coordinate their support towards national development visions using existing structures and processes? • How to generate evidence that more effectively guides cross-sector planning and implementation?

SDG Implementation: Anticipated challenges and lessons learned • How to formulate integrated policies for improving and sustaining development progress? • How to establish integrated implementation mechanisms supported through partnerships with clear budgets and financing needs? • How to measure integrated implementation progress and adjust reporting mechanisms?
