  1. Estimating Quotients Unit of Study: Common Core Critical Area- Division Global Concept Guide: 1 of 3

  2. Content Development “Estimation skills include identifying when estimation is appropriate, determining the level of accuracy needed, selecting the appropriate method of estimation, and verifying solutions or determining the reasonableness of situations using various estimation strategies.” - 4th Grade Flipbook p. 11 This GCG will focus on using friendly or compatible numbers such as factors (students seek to fit numbers together - e.g., rounding to factors and grouping numbers together that have round sums like 100 or 1000). The Go Math! lessons referenced in this PowerPoint are taken from the 4th grade Go Math Florida Common Core edition that is available on thinkcentral.com

  3. Day 1/2 • Essential Question: How can you use basic facts to estimate quotients? • Use problems that are cited on the GCG from the 4th grade Go Math Florida Common Core SE and TE books that can be accessed on thinkcentral.com or through the document on the GCG that has been created with all of the questions. • Students should be engaged through problem solving scenarios. They should apply their understanding of estimating quotients to real world situations. Estimation of quotients should not be limited to this GCG, but should be applied whenever dividing as a means of checking for reasonableness of answers. • By the end of day 2, students should be able to apply their knowledge of basic facts to use compatible numbers for estimating quotients.

  4. Enrich/Reteach/Intervention • Re-teach – • Students who do not have basic fact fluency may need to use a multiplication table as a resource for finding reasonable compatible numbers when estimating. • Florida Online Intervention Skill 8, Skill 14 and Skill 15 (Learn the Math, Do the Math, Independent Practice) • Core – • Given a division expression, students can find two estimates using compatible numbers and identify which estimate they think will be the closest to the actual quotient. Students can then use a calculator to find the quotient and identify the best estimate. • Florida Online Intervention Skill 8 and Skill 15 (Independent Practice, Quiz) • Enrich – • Given a division expression, 2 students can come up with an estimate using compatible numbers, then use a calculator to see who’s estimate is closest to the quotient. If a student has a closer estimate, they win the round. • Given an estimated quotient, students can create problem solving scenarios that would result in that estimate. • Florida Online Intervention Skill 8 and Skill 15 (Independent Practice, Quiz)
