  2. VISUALIZE • Active VISUALIZERS… • Deal with text as if it were a picture! • Consciously imagine stories as photographic snapshots or movies! • Focus their attention on the physical details of a setting, action, or character!

  3. LISTEN • Active LISTENERS… • Approach text with sensitivity to sounds, both expressed and implied! • Consciously imagine the background noise of a story! • Imagine precisely how words and sentences are pronounced! • Pay attention to authors’ suggestions!

  4. QUESTION • Active QUESTIONERS… • Constantly try to understand text, actions, or characters more deeply! • Pay as much attention to the things they don’t know as to the things they do! • Read slowly enough to notice when they are unsure of something! • Constantly ask “WHY”!

  5. CONNECT • Active CONNECTORS… • Find ways of placing themselves within a piece of writing! • Relate their own experiences with those of characters in a story, however simple they may be! • Constantly find ways of identifying elements of fantasy and reality! • Will emerge from their reading more curious about the world!

  6. PREDICT • Active PREDICTORS… • Are never satisfied with where they leave a story, nor with where the story leaves them! • Imagine various outcomes of a given action! • Develop a firm understanding of consequences in real life! • Flex their creative muscle constantly while reading!

  7. Put all these ACTIVE READING STRATEGIES together… …and take control of your reading experience!
