Developing Student Teachers' Knowledge of Phonicsin Secondary Teacher Education The teaching of reading – and specifically the importance of the systematic teaching of synthetic phonics – has become a ‘national priority’ for schools and a statutory requirement of teacher education programmes. The PhoniSTE project seeks to address this by developing – and researching – a set of teaching resources about the teaching of reading and specifically the role of phonics in secondary teacher education programmes. The project will not only establish a strong evidence base but also work within an action research framework that will produce materials and literature of interest to teachers in the UK and internationally. • Partnerships are a key feature of our research process: • Working with partner schools in the PGCE programme • Encouraging trainee teachers to become active research participants • Drawing on the expertise of teachers, subject tutors and colleagues • Including parents in reporting Dr Viv Ellis Dr Ian Thompson Dr Hannah Grainger Clemson
