Why a Petting Zoo? • Opportunity to compare and contrast eReader models and their features in order to facilitate appropriate selection or recommendation to fit user needs. • National Book Count Report (snapshot -- 1 week in January) • eBooks made up 10% of Canadian book sales. • Canadian public libraries reported 3% of checkouts were eBooks. • Many advantages of eReaders: • Available 24/7 with internet access and delivered almost instantaneously • They take up much less space than print books • No trees are required to manufacture paper for eBooks • Fonts can be resized to suit the reader

IMPORTANT TERMS • DRM • Digital Rights Management • DRM technology helps protect titles from unlawful sharing. • A digital lock put on eBooks to prevent piracy (anti-piracy technology). • Every digital title has digital rights – or permissions – set by the publisher. • The permissions outline what a user can do with the title after download. • DRM are specific to vendors (Apple DRM, Amazon DRM, Adobe DRM)

  17. B&W vs Color (e-Ink vsbacklit) Advantages/disadvantages to both. Affects eyes and battery time, but what will they be reading? Graphic novels? Reading outside? Glare from sun if backlit. Reading in dark? Need light for e-Ink just like you would for a regular book

  18. WiFi capabilities? Direct download of library books vs transferring through your laptop/desktop Audio capabilities for audiobooks also? File format compatability (eg.
