  2. AGENDA Welcome to INEGI Overview of INEGI Brief Presentation of Activity

  3. OVERVIEW OF INEGI

  4. OVERVIEW HISTORY • INEGI was created by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, in 1986, as an interface Institution between university and industry, aiming to strengthen the liaison between the academia and the business. • Since its foundation to 1992 it was mainly an office to facilitate the administrative work required by the cooperation between university and industry. • Between 1992 and 1995 a great investment (8 million euros) was made in its own facilities and capabilities - building, laboratories and training of its own staff. With this investment INEGI became able to carry out R&D and innovation activity by its own. • Since then INEGI has grown consistently and consolidated a position as partner of industry for R&D activity.

  5. OVERVIEW POSITIONNING • It is a private non-profit organization and recognized by the Portuguese Government as an Institution of Public Utility. • Shareholders: • 33% - University of Porto • 67% - 58 private companies and 3 associations representing industry sectors • It is positioned as an institution of interface with a strong link to both University and industry. MISSION Contribute to the increase of the competitiveness of the national industry, through R&D, Knowledge and Technology Transfer and Training, in the fields of engineering design, materials, production technology, energy and industrial management.

  6. OVERVIEW ACTIVITY IN FIVE MAIN AXIS • Knowledge creation and development of technologies, usually 100% funded by FCT (National Foundation for Science and Technology) and EC. • R&D projects with industry co-financed by Portuguese and European funds. • R&D projects with industry funded by clients. • Technical consulting. • Training – tailor made training programs, mostly “in-company”. 64% of total Revenues (2007)

  17. SAMPLE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS (MATERIALS)

  18. CASAM - CIVIL AIRCRAFT SECURITY AGAINST MANPADS INCREASE OF BOLTED JOINT PERFORMANCE FOR CFRP USING HYBRID LAMINATES COMPOSITE BOLTED JOINT ANALYSIS FOR SPACE CFRP STRUCTURES PIBRAC: DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF BRAKES FOR AERONAUTICS MODELLING OF POROUS SHELLS NON-CONVENTIONAL MATRIX/CARBON NANOTUBES REINFORCED COMPOSITE FOR APPLICATIONS IN SPACE

  19. PROJECTS CASAM - Civil Aircraft Security Against Manpads Development of a system for detect and misguide portable missiles from terrorist attacks. PARTNERS: SAGEM THALES ONERA LUFTHANSA EADS DIEHL-BGT

  20. PROJECTS Increase of Bolted Joint Performance for CFRP using hybrid laminates The primary objective of the study is to study the optimization of highly loaded bolted joints. The hybrid laminates using metallic inserts (FML) are used as local reinforcement of the bolted joint. INEGI’s tasks is to develop advanced FE models and perform detailed sensitivity studies of the joint performance from specimen to Engineering Model level. PARTNERS: ESA DLR HPS Contraves INEGI EADS MT Aerospace

  21. PROJECTS Composite Bolted Joint Analysis for Space CFRP Structures The primary objective of the study was to develop enhanced bolted joints for spacecraft composite structures. The study included collecting all information relevant to the design, manufacturing and verification of currently used CFRP structures and joint systems and to provide a standardized procedure for the design analysis, manufacturing and testing of mechanically fastened joints in advanced composite structures.

  22. PROJECTS PIBRAC: Development of the Next Generation of Brakes for Aeronautics Development of a new type of brakes based on piezoelectric engines • PARTNERS: • SAGEM • AIRBUS • MESSIER-BUGATTI • Universidade de Paderborn • SKODA • IMMG • SAMTECH • NOLIAC • BAM • A. Brito

  23. Modelling of Porous Shells The primary objective of the study is to develop accurate models of the behaviour of triaxial woven fabrics subjected to thermal and acoustic loads. INEGI’s task will be to perform thermo-elastic tests on samples using the custom made Shearography system. Additionally, INEGI will perform acoustic, vibration and thermo-elastic tests on an Engineering Model. PARTNERS:

  24. PROJECTS Non-conventional matrix/carbon nanotubes reinforced composite for applications in space The primary objective of the study is to develop novel composite materials using organic and inorganic matrices reinforced by carbon nanotubes. INEGI’s role is to perform a state-of-the-art study on the inorganic matrix carbon nanotube composite materials and to perform mechanical characterisation tests on specimens. PARTNERS:
