  1. South Africa June 16th – June 25th 2011 Special thanks to “Friends of University Academy” for supporting this trip!

Trip Information • June 16th Tour Starts (Flight & Hotel Information will be available 30 days prior to departure). • Traveling with 2 other student groups; there will be approximately 40 in the entire group. • Tour includes a full time tour director. • June is Winter time in South Africa; temperatures should be in the 80’s with cooler temperatures in the evenings. • Time Difference: South Africa is 8 hours ahead of Kansas City. • Flight Length is approximately 15 hours.

  3. What to Pack?? How many suitcases can I bring? One Suitcase (to be checked) and a carry on (backpack) What type of clothes should I take? Long pants, shorts, t-shirts (light colors are recommended),a sweatshirt or light jacket, sturdy and comfortable walking shoes What else do I need to bring? Insect repellent, sunglasses, a hat, a power inverter (available at major retailers), any medications, sunscreen, and personal hygiene items (shampoos, soap, deodorant) Don’t forget the camera, extra batteries, and things to keep you occupied during the flight!

  4. How much money should I bring? • It is recommended that prior to the trip you convert approximately $100 to South Africa’s currency which is the Rand. • We recommend an additional $100-$150 be put on a prepaid visa card that can be used at the stores, restaurants, and ATM machines in South Africa. • Do NOT send traveler’s checks!

  5. Contact During the Trip • Check with your cell phone providers for costs • Purchase Phone Cards in South Africa to ensure they will work • Ms. Jackson will have access to a phone for emergency situations only! • A trip diary will be updated with pictures every other day!

  6. Deadlines & Dates To Remember • Passports should be applied for by April 1st and verified by Ms. Jackson or Ms. Vail at University Academy. • Currency Exchange Requests are due June 2nd by 5:00. • Bon Voyage party/meeting will be June 13th @ 5:30 in the MayerbergRoom. All students and parents are invited and required to attend. • Board Presentation on September 20th at 4:30. All students who participated must attend and give a short presentation about the experience.
