  1. What’s up with the JA-SIG Clearinghouse? JA-SIG Denver June, 2003 Patty Gertz

  2. The Clearinghouse Then Coming Soon Patty’s fantasy life Links Long lists Not categorized No search Current? Out of synch with CVS branch Certified against versions? uPortal 2.1.2 Cleaned up In synch with CVS branch Categorization Working Version -Still not complete Naming Standards uPortal instantiation holds full clearinghouse Accommodates all types of content Repository for general higher ed use Integrate our own tools

  3. The Tabs Home Research uPortal Channels Applications Community News Home: JA-SIG web site, announcements Research: White papers, standards, position papers, “how to” when there’s no code, documentation. uPortal Channels: All channels, reflects everything in CVS, labeled for version Applications: Java apps we can share Community: Institutional references, legal constraints, dating opportunities. News: What’s up and coming?

  4. Where are we now? • Approximately 45 channels, including 20 bundled in Unicon’s Academus • 4 different places for information – the JA-SIG website, the CVS repository (especially the channel tree,) the current clearinghouse, the new clearinghouse • Good grasp of everyone’s legal / intellectual property requirements • Screening of JA-SIG members by a manual process • No standards for naming, documentation, validation against version • No easy way to distinguish open source vs. commercial channels

  5. Where are we headed? • Better, more consistent information – Contact, version certification, description, documentation, pointer to CVS, demo or guest version • Better hardware, courtesy of Sun. A true, supported, production environment • Develop and show off our own stuff – uPortal, CUCMS, Announcements - clearinghouse will be a uPortal instantiation - news will be delivered through Columbia’s or CalPoly’s announcements - content will be delivered through CUCMS - WebDAV for document repository management • Search capabilities, underlying search engine • More sort capabilities • Personalization • Authentication without manual intervention • Integration with the CVS Tree • Channels denoted when there is a fee

  6. Way out there… • Easier collaboration • Encourage open source • Shibboleth Authentication • Web services • Long term sustainability model • A view of the Higher Ed world that extends beyond uPortal • A critical tool for the Higher Ed community • Repository for other Higher Ed organizations • OKI, Hekate, CSG, others?

  7. Outstanding Issues • Production hardware access • Who gets to post announcements? • Role definitions – who is administrator? • Automating authorization • Authentication across a wide higher ed community • Content Management configuration issues • Synchronization between CVS and the clearinghouse • Merging of JA-SIG website, uPortal website and clearinghouse website

  8. What makes the Clearinghouse valuable? A great vehicle for communication – • For java developers • Vet ideas, concepts. Share code – can it get you halfway there? • If we’re smarter about writing it, can we use it intact? • Web services that you host for others? • For uPortal shops • Lots more channels than you can write alone. Solutions for the integration problems you have. • For the Higher Ed community • A place for their deliverables, white papers, standards, best practices.

  9. How do we get there from here, or,How can you help? • Resources – who can donate some people time? Web design Java developers that can help migrate existing stuff. Designers to address authentication, security issues. Someone to help with the search functionality. DBA expertise Integrators Content providers. Outreach – liaisons to other Higher Ed organizations. Infrastructure is taken care of for a year. Contact: Patty Gertz, Princeton University Patty@princeton.edu
