Lady Capulet: Matriarch of the house of Capulet; wishes Juliet to marry Paris. Tybalt: Cousin of Juliet, nephew of Lord Capulet. Capulet ServantsNurse: Juliet's personal attendant and confidante. Peter: Capulet servant, assistant to the nurse. Gregory and Samson: Capulet servants.

Mercutio- Romeos friend who puts a curse on both houses before he dies. Chorus- who gives the opening prologue and one other speech, both in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet. Friar John: Another friar who is sent to deliver Friar Laurence's letter to Romeo. Apothecary: Pharmacist/druggist who reluctantly sells Romeo poison.

  5. Bandello originally wrote the novel Romeo and Juliet and later on Shakespeare formed it into the now known famous play. Romeo and Juliet was written by Shakespeare early on in his literary career, between 1594 and 1595.

  6. In the play Shakespeare uses language and themes in a way that foreshadows the tragedy of “star-crossed” lovers(Romeo and Juliet) while also uniting the acts and scenes and causing them to flow from one scene to another. The prologue tells the reader about the fate of Romeo and Juliet, through Shakespeare’s witty language. Throughout the play it always maintains suspense and keeps the reader’s interest. The play is written in a way that the reader knows what’s going to happen and what has already happened while the characters in the do not, which causes the scenes to build suspense and become more dramatic.

  7. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is about two rival families, the Montague's and Capulet's.   8. In the beginning of the play Romeo who is a young Montague has just had his heart broken by his first love Rosaline. Romeo is a tragic character who is hasty and emotional and wants to get over Rosaline any way he can.

  9. Juliet is a Capulet who is young and hasty and believes in true love. Juliet's Parents are trying to get her to marry a young and wealthy man named Paris. Juliet is Juliet thinks you should only marry if your in love and she doesn't love Paris. Juliet wants to wait until she has fallen in love to get married and this upsets her parents.

  10. One night the Capulet's are giving a masquerade ball at their mansion. Lady Capulet is looking forward to introducing her young daughter Paris who has asked for her hand in marriage. Juliet does meet Paris at the ball, but she also meets Romeo Montague, who sneaked into the party with his friends. As soon as Romeo and Juliet meet they think its love at first sight. Only as the party ends do they realize that they are each other’s “loathed enemy.”

  11. Romeo’s friends Benvolio and Mercutio look for him after the party, but Romeo decides to hide from them so that they’ll stop teasing him about being in love. He finds his way into one of the gardens of the Capulet's home and realizes that he’s right under Juliet’s balcony. He surprises her they declare their love for each other. They make plans to have Romeos friend friar Lawrence marry then the next day. They make theses plans in secret so nobody can forbid their marriage.

  12. The Friar decides to marry Romeo and Juliet hoping that their marriage might end the feud between their families. Romeo sends Juliet a message thru her nurse telling her where and when to meet him , and the two are secretly married that afternoon.

Later that same day, Benvolio and Mercutio run into Tybalt, Juliet's cousin who is looking for Romeo because he is angry about Romeo sneaking into the party the night before and he challenges Romeo to fight when he arrives. Romeo refuses to fight him swearing that he holds the name of Capulet “as dearly as mine own.” Mercutio decides to fight Tybalt. They start fighting and Tybalt stabs Mercutio when Romeo steps between them to try to stop them. Before Mercutio dies he says “a plague on both your houses.” After Mercutio dies, Romeo fights Tybalt and kills him. The Prince arrives on the scene and banishes Romeo for his involvement in the fight.

  14. Romeo goes to the Friar’s cell and he comforts him and instructs him to leave for Mantua. After Romeo is gone, the Friar says he will petition for Romeos pardon so he can get back into Verona. Romeo and Juliet who have been married for less than one day, have to say goodbye before the next morning. Juliet’s parents still don’t know about her marriage to Romeo and they decide to move up the wedding to Paris. When she tries to refuse the wedding. her parents threaten to throw her out of the house.

  15. Juliet goes to the Friar for help and he gives her a potion to drink before the day of the wedding. The potion will make her seem like she’s dead for forty hours, and then awake as from a enjoyable sleep. Juliet returns home with the potion and apologizes to her parents. They are glad to see her change of heart, her father decides to have the wedding the next day instead of the day after. Juliet takes the potion that night. The next morning, the nurse and her parents find her and believe that she has died. They bury her in their family tomb.

  16. Romeo is in Mantua when his servant Balthasar comes to find him. Balthasar doesn’t know about the Friar’s plan, and tells Romeo that Juliet has died. Romeo believes him and decides to go to Verona to see Juliet before she is buried. He buys some deadly poison from an apothecary and plans to take his own life. Meanwhile, the Friar finds out that his message to Romeo has not been delivered, and he goes to Juliet's tomb, fearful of what Romeo might do if he really thinks that Juliet has died.

  17. Romeo sees Paris at Juliet's tomb and Paris challenges Romeo to a fight and murders Paris. Romeo says goodbye to Juliet before drinking the poison, he says “Thus with a kiss I die.” Then the Friar enters the tomb, and Juliet starts to wakeup. The friar sees the bodies of Romeo and Paris and tries to get Juliet to leave with him, but she wont.

  18. Juliet then decides to kill herself, and uses Romeo’s dagger to stab herself. The Prince, the Capulet's, and Lord Montague arrive at the tomb, where the Friar reveals the truth about Romeo and Juliet. The families, realizing that their hatred led to their children’s deaths, finally make peace with one another.

  19. Romeo and Juliet relates to the renaissance because Shakespeare wrote this play during the renaissance . Also during this time women were expected to marry young and marry someone who theirs parents thought was right for them, like Juliet and Paris, and their religion and the church is a big part of their lives in Romeo and Juliet and in the renaissance.
