  1. Mr. Z’s Introduction to HEAT unit

  2. Do you think its Freezing Here?

  3. Is it Freezing Here?

  4. Is it Freezing Here, or Boiling?

  5. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? OBJECTIVES Distinguish between Freezing Point and Melting Point of a Substance Differentiate between Boiling Point, Boiling and Evaporation

  6. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Vocabulary Freezing Point, Boiling Point, Melting Point, Boiling, Evaporation, Distinguish, Differentiate, Unique

  7. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point?

  8. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What does Differentiate mean? To express the specific differences of; to describe the properties of (a thing) whereby it is differenced from another; to discriminate. --

  9. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What does Distinguish mean? To separate by definition of terms (or logical division) of a subject with regard to difference

  10. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Differentiate & Distinguish Synonomous ?

  11. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What happens when water is cooled past its freezing point? It FREEZES ! What happens when any liquid is cooled past its freezing point? It FREEZES !

  12. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Do all liquids have the SAME freezing point? NO! Each liquid has its own unique Freezing Point ! What does unique mean?

  13. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What happens when ice is heated past its melting point? It turns to liquid ! What happens when any liquid is heated past its melting point? It turns to liquid !

  14. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Do all substances have the SAME melting point? NO! Every substance has its own unique Melting Point ! What does unique mean?

  15. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? • How are the “concepts” of melting point and freezing point related? • How are these two concepts different? • Are the Freezing Point and the Melting point of any given substance the same? YES, the temperatures are the same. They just occur in “different directions”

  16. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What happens when water is heated past its boiling point? It boils and turns to steam ! What happens when any liquid is heated past its boiling point? It Boils and form a gas!

  17. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Do all liquids have the SAME boiling point? NO! Each liquid has its own unique Boiling Point !

  18. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What are the two ways that a liquid can turn into a gas? It boils and turns to steam ! It Evaporates ! WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

  19. Boiling: Adding a lot of heat energy

  20. EVAPORATION: the GRADUAL movement of molecules from a liquid to gas

  21. REMBER: temperature is defined as the AVERAGE kinetic energy. Some molecules have more, some have less, hence “AVERAGE”

  22. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Evaporation usually occurs at the surface of a liquid. The liquid molecules gain enough kinetic energy so that they escape into the air. That is why an opened bottle of perfume will spread through out a room! Where do you think evaporation occurs more often? They vibrate less

  23. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Where do you think evaporation occurs more often? Here?

  24. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Where do you think evaporation occurs more often? Or, Here?

  25. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Where do you think evaporation occurs more often? In a warmer place? Or, in a colder place? …the warmer a substance is, the more likely it is to evaporate!

  26. Apply your knowledge!

  27. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What happens to the (motion of the) particles of a solid as they begin to melt (heat) to form a liquid? They vibrate more! What happens to the particle of a liquid when it freezes to a solid? They vibrate less

  28. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? What happens to the (motion of the) particles of a liquid as they heat to form a gas? They vibrate more! What happens to the particle of a gas when it cools to a liquid? They vibrate less

  29. Apply your knowledge! AGAIN !!

  30. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Let’s say you had a hunk of rock. Say a hunk of granite rock. Does everyone know what granite looks like? What phase of matter is a rock of granite? Does granite have a Melting Point? Will it ever turn into a liquid?

  31. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Of course, if Granite gets hot enough it will turn into a liquid! That is what makes up volcanoes and lava! - MELTED ROCK! How would you describe the vibration of particles of liquid granite as compared to solid granite?

  32. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Class Activity: W/S 6-4 and 6-5

  33. AIM: What are Freezing Point and Boiling Point? Homework: INTERNET QUESTIONS
