  2. INK (MÒ) 墨 • Ink is made from a mixture of ink and resin • Commonly used in is made from pine soot, lacquer soot, and oil soot • The importance of ink is to control the hue (form or appearance of color)

  3. BRUSH PEN (MÁO BÎ)  毛筆 • The tip is made from animal hair, such as goats and rabbits • Flexibility of the brush is the most unique characteristic, this allows one to manipulate the strokes • The brush allows the holder to create lines of varying thickness

  4. PAPER (ZHÎ) 紙 • Paper was invented in the Eastern Han Dynasty • It must be able to absorb ink quick and hold it well • Cannot be firm or smooth • Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting require different kinds of paper

  5. INK STONE (YÀN) 硯 • To use ink in a stick form a ink stone is required • “The stone used must be of relatively fine whetstone materials to facilitate the grinding of the ink without harming the bristles of the brush pen” (web.fccj.org)
