Safety while abroad • U.S. State Department registration for warnings and evacuation if necessary: https://travelregistration.state.gov • A few tips for staying safe in a foreign country: • Don’t travel with lots of cash, keep your money/credit cards concealed, and don’t go to ATMs alone • Keep an extra credit/ATM card in your luggage • Keep a copy of your passport with you at all times • Don’t walk around by yourself at night • Make sure someone knows where you are at all times • Research companies well before you travel with them • Buy a cheap, local phone and program emergency numbers • As always: safe sex, seatbelts and helmets!

To-do for UNChttp://www.med.unc.edu/oia • All students: • Travel waiver form • 2 travel and global health modules • Are you traveling as a “medical student?” • UNC approved travel health insurance • Doing research? • IRB approval and IRB training (human subjects research) • Receiving credit? • UNC faculty advisor and an on-site preceptor • Let us know about your blog • These requirements are mandatory.

  6. HAVE FUN! There are over 50 MS1s traveling abroad this summer to a variety of countries around the world. We encourage you to explore the local culture and interact with the local people in order to have the best possible experience. Represent the UNC SOM well and make your time abroad count! HAVE FUN DURING YOUR LAST SUMMER EVER!!!!!
