German National Catalogue of Serials (Zeitschriftendatenbank) • 1.4 million titles (more than 25.000 of which are online publications) with more than 7.5 million holdings • The title list spans periodicals from all countries, in all languages, and on all subjects. East Asia Collection • collection building policy covers all areas of interest • all countries of this region are included: PR China (with Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Hong Kong and Macao), Taiwan, Mongolia, Japan, and North and South Korea • humanities and social sciences • rare ancient material from China and Japan such as manuscripts and woodblock prints • Access through own Unicode-databases and special inter-library loan service • Databases for German registered users in conjunction with the policy of German Research Foundation Matthias Kaun | The Berlin State Library | Shanghai Library

Acquistion Principles for e-resources • Only databases which allow nationwide access within Germany are acquired resp. licensed. • The contract for the special nationwide inter-library loan service („Blauer Leihverkehr“) is the base for access within Germany. The registered institutions for the „Blauer Leihverkehr“ must be able to get access to the electronic resources of the East Asia Department of the Berlin State Library. • Usually, electronic resources should be hosted in Berlin. • The technical infrastructure – being quite different for the various East Asian databases – should be integrated into the Berlin State Library IT structures. • The use of the electronic resources should be offered through the same IT structures of the Berlin State Library as those of the other departments Matthias Kaun | The Berlin State Library | Shanghai Library
