  2. MPO Testing The challenge of testing high density MPO/MTP connectivity in data centers and plug-and-play networks is still being perfected. Recently, manufacturers have been working to develop new tools to speed the testing of mass connectors as the adoption of MPO connectors skyrockets in data centers where it’s being for use in 40 & 100Gb connections. FiberNext has responded to these market needs by developing an easy to use MPO switch that works with existing OTDRs and/or VFLs in a number of test scenarios.

  5. Use of the MPO Switch with an OTDR The MPO switch from FiberNext can be utilized with any OTDR regardless of brand; although a high resolution (<5ns) is recommended.

  6. Use of the MPO Switch with a VFL Likewise, the FiberNext MPO switch can be utilized with any VFL/VFI regardless of brand, make/model or date of manufacture.

  7. MPO Switch Fundamentals Single Fiber Input Ribbon/Mass MPO Output VFL or OTDR The device allows users to test through the switch into any of the 12 fibers in the MTP/MPO connector without the hassle and potential damage of un-mating and re-mating fibers during testing (as is typical with fanout cables).

  8. VFL Testing of MPO Cables and Cassettes An MPO/MTP Test Lead To the cable under test And a patchcord And an MPO Adapter YOUR VFL The MPO Switch To advance to the next fiber, press the increment up/down keys Using the switch in conjunction with a VFL, the user can cycle through each of the 12 fibers and note the polarity/continuity visually on the far end of the cable under test.

  9. OTDR Testing of MPO Cables An MPO/MTP Test Lead To the cable under test And a patchcord And an MPO Adapter YOUR OTDR The MPO Switch To advance to the next fiber, press the increment up/down keys Using the switch in conjunction with an OTDR, the user can cycle through each of the 12 fibers and take discrete OTDR test results without the use of a fan-out cable and excessive patching.

  10. OTDR Testing of MPO Cables MPO Test Lead 1 MPO Test Lead 2 Cable under test Patchcord MPO Adapter MPO Adapter OTDR MPO Switch For MPO-MPO cable assembly testing, the user could also elect to use a far-end “receive cable”, for framed link testing.

  11. OTDR Reel Testing of Bulk Cable MPO Pigtail Bare Ribbons Exposed Patchcord OTDR Mass ARC Fusion Splicer w/ Pause Setting Ribbon Cable Under Test MPO Switch For bulk ribbon fiber cable testing “on-reel”, the technician can utilize a mass fusion splicer, set to a pause setting in order to orient all 12 fibers for quick validation testing.
