  2. Geography of Cuba • The island of Cuba is Located in the Caribbean. • It is just south of Florida, about 100 miles. • Between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean • Cuba’s topography consists of bays, reefs, islets, and keys.

  3. Cuba Facts and Culture • The Official language is Spanish • People live in huts and small houses • The population is 11,346,670 • Slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania. • The currency is the Peso

  4. Invented the salsa dance • Much of Cuban music comes from African background • The vocal music is spiritual singing • The roots of a lot of the Cuban music forms are from a form of social club that African slaves brought to the island. Cuban History

  5. Claves • Made of thick wood, sometimes hollow. • With hands, clanging together • Very important to Afro-Cuban music • They are about 20-30 centimeters long

  6. Bongos • Played with hands • Made out of types of wood and animal hides • Future bongos are made with metal

  7. Conga Drums • Made of wood with animal hide on the top • Made with dogwood • They are played with the hands
