  1. IT Careers Prepared by: Careene McCallum-Rodney

  2. Computer Technician • Computer technicians: • install, • repair, • maintain, • and analyze many different types of computer equipment. • This includes everything from laptops to systems that monitor changes in the Earth’s atmosphere.

  3. Computer Engineers • Computer engineers (or computer hardware engineers): • research, • design, • develop, • test, • and oversee the manufacture and installation of computer hardware. • Computer hardware includes computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related equipment such as keyboards, routers, and printers.

  4. Software Engineer • Software engineering (SE) is concerned with developing and maintaining software systems that : • behave reliably and efficiently, • are affordable to develop and maintain, • and satisfy all the requirements that customers have defined for them. Continues

  5. Software Engineer • A software engineer is a licensed professional engineer who is schooled and skilled in the application of engineering discipline to the creation of software. • A software engineer is often confused with a programmer, but the two are vastly different disciplines. • While a programmer creates the codes that make a program run, a software engineer creates the designs the programmer implements.

  6. Software Tester • Once a project reaches a certain stage of development, your role is to ensure it works exactly as it should. • When testing a new piece of software, it'll be up to you to try as best you can to ‘break’ it! • This helps the design process and ensures a faultless program at every stage of development. • By working closely with software designers and program managers, you’ll be able to understand what the product is meant to do, its key features and its users.

  7. Software Tester • Once you understand what the program is meant to be, you’ll then carry out tasks such as: • functional testing, • customer scenario testing, • stress testing, • performance testing, • scalability testing • and international testing.

  8. Webmaster • The webmaster is the person in charge of maintaining a Web site. • The jobs of a webmaster include: • writing HTML for Web pages, • organizing the Web site's structure, • responding to e-mails about the Web site, • and keeping the site up-to-date.

  9. Web Developer • A web developer is responsible for programming the functionality of a web site. • So while a requirements analyst is tasked with determining what a web site should do, the web developer figures out how it is going to do it and then writes the necessary programming code. • Much of this programming code is behind the scenes and not visible to the user. • However, a web developer may also be responsible for the code that the user sees..

  10. Software Trainer • A software trainer is a type of training specialist who teaches individuals how to use computer applications or programs such as: • spreadsheets, • desktop publishing programs, • or computer network systems software. • The nature of the job requires knowledge of computer software programs and strong communication skills.

  11. Multimedia Artist • A multimedia artist is an artist who creates work which spans multiple media, usually with a focus on the integration of electronic media.  • Specifically multi-media artists and animators use computers and other electronic media to create animation, special effects and other visual images on video and film. • They typically work in advertising, computer systems design services and motion picture and video industries.

  12. Computer Programmer • A person who writes programs for the operation of computers, esp. as an occupation.

  13. Systems Analyst • A person who analyzes a complex process or operation in order to improve its efficiency, esp. by applying a computer system. • An individual in charge  of designing, modifying, or analyzing various systems to ensure compatibility anduser effectiveness. • System analysts do not focus on hard-coding, but more on evaluating the code and making suggestions.

  14. IT Manager • IT management is the discipline whereby all of the technology resources of a firm are managed in accordance with its needs and priorities. • These resources may include tangible investments like: • computer hardware, • software, • data, • networks • and data centre facilities, • as well as the staffs who are hired to maintain them. Continues

  15. IT Manager • Managing this responsibility within a company entails many of the basic management functions: • like budgeting, • staffing, • and organizing and controlling, • along with other aspects that are unique to technology, like: • change management,  • software design, • network planning, • tech support

  16. Systems Programmer • System programming (or systems programming) is the activity of programming system software. • The primary distinguishing characteristic of systems programming when compared to application programming is that: • application programming aims to produce software which provides services to the user (e.g. word processor), • whereas systems programming aims to produce software which provides services to the computer hardware (e.g. disk defragmenter). It requires a greater degree of hardware awareness.

  17. Database Administrator • A database administrator (short form DBA) is a person responsible for the: • installation, • configuration • upgrade • administration • monitoring • and maintainance of databases in an organization.

  18. Database Administrator • Their role includes: • the development and design of database strategies, • system monitoringand improving database performance and capacity, • and planning for future expansion requirements. • They may also plan, coordinate andimplement security measures to safeguard the database

  19. File Librarian • A person who works in the data library and keeps track of the tapes and disks that are stored and logged out for use. • Also known as a "media librarian."
