  1. Alcatel Converged Wireless LAN Solution

  2. Context of business mobility and evolution • Business mobility is impacted by: Convergence addresses business needs - it is the consolidation of service into fewer platforms and infrastructure User’s have mobility needs: such as improved efficiency by staying connected regardless of application and location The right answer to support this evolution is converged mobility

  3. Directory Requirements on infrastructure to support converged mobility solutions • Convergence requires availability • High availability • Strong QoS to guarantee voice and mission critical applications • In wired and wireless infrastructures • Convergence requires security • Best of breed security • Securing the wired access • Securing the wireless access • Convergence requires seamless mobility • Seamless hand-over • Key for mobile applications (voice, specific vertical apps) • Convergence requires policy-based operations • Simple and unified management • Consistent capabilities and manageability network wide, whatever the infrastructure (wired / wireless)

  4. Alcatel enterprise infrastructure vision “To provide our customers with the industry's best value in highly available, secure, and easy to manage network solutions” MANAGEABILITY • Consistency across the wired and wireless network • Unified management solutions AVAILABILITY • Wired and wireless designed for best in class resiliency • Powerful QoS on wired and wireless for mission critical applications SECURITY • Multi-layer wired and wireless security framework • Unmatched user authentication, rogue detection, and control

  5. An advanced WLAN infrastructure • OmniAccess 4012 and 4024 wireless switches • Distributed approach, usually in the wiring closet • Wireless control and wire-line capabilities • AP can be connected to 10/100 port on a wireless switch • 12 or 24 10/100 physical interfaces with PoE • One or two port Gigabit uplink • OmniAccess 4102 wireless appliance • Centralized approach, usually in the data center • Wireless control, wireline connectivity to the data center LAN switch • Not facing clients: no 10/100 ports, no PoE • Traffic backhauled from the edge to the appliance • Dual Gigabit Ethernet uplinks to connect an appliance to the backbone • Supports up to 36 Aps • OmniAccess 1200 access points • 802.11b/g and 802.11a/b/g (multimode) • 1200R extends WLAN services over WAN links (T1, cable modem, FR, etc.) • Omni directional, sectorized directional antenna, or external antenna • 802.3af in-line powered (out-band power optional) • Air monitoring plus traffic forwarding in the same device • Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP)

  6. Standards specific to WLANs • IEEE 802.11 – The original wireless LAN standard that specified 1-2 Mbps speeds over the air. [1997] • 802.11b - Described faster data rates (11 Mbps) over the 2.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) bands [early 1999] • 802.11a - Described a much faster data rate (54 Mbps) over the 5 GHz UNI frequency bands. Although faster, it is incompatible with 802.11b. [late 1999] • 802.11g - Rates equally as fast as 802.11a (54 Mbps) over 2.4 GHz and backward compatible with 802.11b [2003]

  7. Alcatel WLAN system architecture • Light access point architecture • Scalable: access point is not a managed entity • Robust: access point software complexity is minimized • Advanced: unmatched RF management, rich network services • Full radio support (802.11b/g/a) –WIFI alliance certified • Matches focus of OmniSwitch value propositions • Manageability, high availability, security, value

  8. Alcatel WLAN system manageability • Manageability – customer and channel skill gap solution • Automatic RF management (channel assignment / power adjustment) • Integrated automated network modeling in OmniVista Air Control System • Centralized policy-based network management application • QoS, VLAN, security

  9. Management: The OmniVista Air Control System (ACS) • WLAN systems management • WLAN planning (RF prediction/site survey) • Intelligent RF management - portal into AirView software   • Wireless Protection System (WPS) • Locating tracking • Port mirroring / monitoring •  Fully-featured EMS system • Network-wide FCAPS • Centralized visibility into clients • Troubleshooting, alarms, upgrades, etc. • Advanced policy engine • Point and click policy assignments (layers 1-3) • Network-wide visibility • Flexible access options • CLI, HTTP, HTTPS, SNMP • Detailed GUI, including accurate heat maps • Integrates with external mgmt tools • HP OpenView and other OSS via SNMP

  10. X OmniAccess 4102 / 4012 / 4024 X OmniAccess 1200 Availability: a foundation for voice over wireless LAN • High availability • Automatic hole coverage in case of AP failure • 1:N WLAN appliance protection • Strong QoS: per VLAN for data, SVP support for voice (Spectralink Voice Protocol), future 802.11e

  11. From AP to AP on same switch within same subnet From AP to AP on different switches within same subnet From AP to AP on different switches across subnets Continuous availability for seamless mobility Enterprise server or IP-PBX Router Subnet B Subnet A Fast roaming – less than 100ms roaming across L3 subnets!

  12. CrystalSec multi-layered securityOmniSwitch + OmniAccess + OmniVista • Setting the standard for WLAN security • Full protocol suite support • 802.1x, WEP, TKIP, WPA, AES, IPSec, 802.11i ready • Rogue access point detection, localization, containment • VPN and ACL enforcement at WLAN switch / appliance • VLAN and AVLAN capable • Secure by default (as mandated by CrystalSec) • OmniSwitch + OmniAccess = industry’s most comprehensive security • Securing the wired access: AVLAN / 802.1x / group mobility VLAN OmniSwitch • Securing the wireless access: 802.1x on AP, encryption, and rogue management • The value of OmniVista network management • Rogue control • A unified tool to manage security, VLAN, QoS policy management
