Danube Region Scientific support to the Danube Strategy Launched by the JRC in 2011 • In close collaboration with key scientific partners of the Danube countries: • Science Academies (LoI with 11 partner Academies) • Universities (LoI with Danube Rectors' Conference representing almost 70 universities of the region)

Danube Region Objectives • Addressing the scientific needs related to the implementation of the EUSDR • JRC, as the EC's in-house science service, has strong expertise on the Danube Region (EFAS, Danube Soil Information System, water quality monitoring, etc.) • Promoting a cross-cutting approach • Addressing the interdependenciesbetween different EUSDR Priority Areas and helping to avoid duplication of efforts

Strengthening scientific cooperation in the Danube Region • Implementation in close cooperation which key scientific actors of the Danube Region • Facilitating exchange of knowledge between countries with different performance level in R&D • Stimulating scientific excellence to improve scientific performance and thereby innovation capacity and competitiveness

Danube Region Scientific Support to the Danube Strategy High-level event on the Scientific Support to the Danube Strategy 24-25 June 2014, Vienna organisedin the frame of 4 thematic flagship clusters: • Danube Water Nexus • Danube Land and Soil Nexus • Danube Air Nexus • Danube Bioenergy Nexus 3 horizontal flagship clusters: • Danube Reference Data and Service Infrastructure • Support to research and innovation strategies for Smart Specialisation • Danube Innovation Partnership Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, 26-27 June 2014, Vienna

Danube Region Danube Reference Data and Service Infrastructure • Scope • Provides access to and facilitates the exchange of comparable quality-data and services across multiple domains • Facilitates the cooperation between Danube countries and incentivize the production of harmonized data for cross-border applications • Helps in identifying data gaps and develop a knowledge base for the Danube Region • Work Package and Output • Danube Reference Data and Service Infrastructure platform

Danube Region Smart Specialisation for the Danube • Scope • Identify and discuss elements of the transnational dimension of Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) • How to use synergies of EU-funds in the Danube macro-region • Work Package and Output • Peer-review of RIS3 of Danube countries; Confidential peer review feedback • Guidelines on funding mechanisms supporting cross-border and trans-national cooperation • Continued follow-up and mutual learning on the implementation of RIS3 • New: Launch event Stairway to Excellence, 2-3 October 2014, Prague

Danube Region Danube Innovation Partnership • Scope • improving Technology Transfer Offices (TTO) and fostering Technology Transfer activities • Establishing thematic or cross-border TTOs • Work Package and Output • An invention award, • IP e-learning module (Patenting Stimulation) • Best Practices Workshops • DIP summer school, 17-24 September 2014, Belgrade

Adriatic-Ionian Region Scientific support to the Adriatic-Ionian Region • 8 countries of the region (equal balance of EU and non EU countries) • Expected to concentrate on four pillars: • Marine & Maritime Growth/Blue Growth • Connecting the Region • Environmental Quality • Sustainable Tourism • Cross cutting issues • Capacity building • Research, innovation and SMEs

Adriatic-Ionian Region JRC potential contributions • Disaster prevention (i.e. flood early warnings EFAS) • Marine Strategy Framework directive • Marine spacial planning MSP initiative • Assessment of costal and marine ecosystem services • Data on marine alien invasions in the area • Bio-optical modelling in costal regions • Socio-economics of fisheries and aquacultures • Maritime surveillance systems • JRC Task Force on Oceans, Seas and the Arctic • JRC will contribute to DG MARE Action Plan • Analysis of role of energy in the EUSAIR
