  1. T.A. on Characterization of supraconductors and magnets • Motivation • SC strands and Cable Test Facility • Magnet Test Stations • Potential Partners

  2. Motivation for SC Magnet & Conductor Tests • Development of new conductors (NbSn, NbTi. others) for High Field Magnets • Validation of conductors (strands, cables, solid conductor) for magnet manufacturing : Ic measurement, magnetization, Rc (interstrand resistance) of cables • Development of magnets : studies on training and stability, thermal and mechanical behaviour, protection, field quality • Quality Control of magnets before installation Projects Involved : • NbTi magnets for LHC Low Beta Upgrade • JRA High Field Magnets • (ITER, GSI)

  3. SC Strand & Cable Test Facility • 1 cold box 130 LHe l/h, 6000 l dewar • FRESCA facility for Ic cable test : up to 17 mm section, in 10 T field, current up to 32 kA, Temperature from 1.8 K to 4.4 K Infrastructure  1 M€, 1 test  20 k€ Expected : 10 test /year for NbTi Luminosity Upgrade (1/5 of equipment capacity) • 7 small cryostats for strand samples tests (Infrastructure  1 M€): • 2 cryostats for Ic on NbTi strand : 1 kA, B = 11 T at 4.2 K, 13 T at 1.9 K • 1 cryostat for Ic test on Nb3Sn strand : 4 kA, B = 12.5 T at 4.2 K • 1 cryostat for thermal transfer measurements on insulated cable : • 1 cryostat for Rc test on cable samples : 4.2 K • 1 cryostat for RRR test on NbTi and Nb3Sn strands • 1 cryostat for Magnetisation test on NbTi strands(to upgrade to Nb3Sn) Expected : 100 test /year for NbSn dev. (1/10 of equipment capacity)

  4. SC Strand & Cable Test Facility

  5. Magnet Test Plants • 12 benches for SC Cold masses up to 15 m long, 15 kA, 1.9 K & 4.3 K Infrastructure  30 M€, 1 test 20 k€ Expected for 2009-2012 : LHC exploitation and low beta upgrade (max. 6 benches) • Test Station with 4 Vertical Cryostats, 20 kA max, 1.9 K & 4.3 K Infrastructure  5 M€, 1 test  5 to 10 k€ Expected for low  upgrade and NbSN dev : 1/2 of equipment capacity (plan to merge it with SM18 Test Plant) • Several external partners make use of Magnetic Measurement Equipment for cryogenic and room temperature measurement (including R.T. magnets) available at CERN.

  6. SM18 Magnet Test Plant

  7. Potential Partners • INFN : Test of prototype Fast Cycling NbTi magnets • ITER : Test of strands • CEA : Test of model NbSn magnets • GSI : Test of strands, cables, prototype magnets (in vertical cryostats) and prototype cold masses (on SM18 test Benches) N.B. : preliminary discussions to test > 300 series cold masses • USA labs for LARP and other NbSn prototype NbSn magnets • University of Sannio (It) : collaboration to develop acquisition systems Proposal : 250 k€ for partners support to the tests, including transport and modification of equipment
