  4. “Do you know the Adverb?” We left France on Wednesday and yesterday we started our Italian trip. At first my parents intended to spend all the time in Rome. However, they then decided to visit Naples and the surrounding area first and go to Rome after that. Earlier today, we went to see the remains at Pompeii and Herculaneum. They were buried when the volcano Mount Vesuvius all of a sudden erupted in 79 AD. I was in a state of excitement all that night. I was extremely anxious to see such famous remains.

The Meaning of Adverbs and functions Adverbs usually express a relation of place, time, manner, number or degree with the verb. • When adverbs answer the question 'WHERE?' they express a relation of PLACE; here, there, inside, outside, everywhere, southward • When adverbs answer the question 'WHEN?' they express a relation of TIME; after, before, since, already, soon, then, now • When adverbs answer the question 'HOW?' they express a relation of MANNER; hard, easily, loudly, quickly, silently, happily, sadly

The Meaning of Adverbs and functions • When adverbs answer the question 'HOW OFTEN?' they express a relation of NUMBER; always, never, seldom, frequently, once, twice, often • When adverbs answer the question 'TO WHAT EXTENT?' they express a relation of DEGREE; almost, also, only, very, enough, rather, too • Adverbs may also express AFFIRMATION or DENIAL yes, no, not, certainly, probably, perhaps • All QUESTION words are also adverbs. how, why, where, when

The adverbs’ function: The adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb and sentence. • Ex. – The band marched quicklyto the music.(The adverb quicklymodifies the verb marched) • Ex. – The band played very popular songs. (The adverb very modifies the adjective popular) • Ex. – I hit him right on his nose. (The adverb right modifies the preposition on) • Ex. – They lived nearly on the top of the hill. (The adverb nearly modifies phrase on the top of the hill.)

The Meaning of Adverbs and functions Ex. – Fortunately,I remembered in time who he was. • (The adverb fortunatelymodifies sentence “Adverb and Adverbial” Adverbial = a word or group of words function as an adverb. Ex.- He will come soon. (adverb) He will come in a few days. (adverbial) He will come after he finished his work.(adverbial) • Theyare three places in the sentences where an adverb can go. They are called front, mid and end position adverb.

  9. The Position of Adverbs After verb when it modified verb: -The old woman walks slowly. Before adjective when it modified adjective: - Sam is very strong. Before adverb when it modified adverb: - The train is very fast. Before sentence when it modified sentence: - Fortunately, the weather stayed fine. - We probably won’t get there in time.

  10. Forms of Adverbs 1. Adverb of Manner is usually add with “ly” quick = quickly careful = carefully noisy = noisily full = fully 2. Adverb has the same with Adjective: fast, hard, straight, low, long, enough 3. Adjective with “ly” manly, cowardly, brotherly, silly, lively, lovely, elderly,
