Positive Behavior Support Workshop • Grades PS-2 • Date: Thursday, October 16, 2014 • Time: 3:15p.m. - 4:15p.m. • Location: Preschool, Room 423 • Presenter: Catherine Parsells, Preschool Teacher • Credit Hours: 1 hour • The positive behavior support course will review the pyramid model for promoting social-emotional competence in young children. We will discuss an overview of the pyramid, discuss interventions, and model tools and resources that teachers can use in the classroom. Click here to register.

Adult CPR/AED Certification: Grades PS-12 Date: Monday, October 20, 2014 – Session 1 Wednesday, October 22, 2014 – Session 2 Time: 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Location: SHS, Health Room Presenter: Joseph D’Alessandro, SHS Teacher Credit Hours: 4 hours total Respond to injuries and sudden illnesses that arise in the workplace, home, or other locations by joining this two-session series in CPR and First Aid training. Completion of both sessions culminates in adult CPR certification and meets the needs of both professionals and laypeople. Cost for certification is paid by attendees. Reading Eggs Grades PS-2 Date: Tuesday, October 21, 2014 Time: 3:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Location: Computer Lab, VDV Presenter: Charlene Tackvic, VDV Teacher Credit Hours: 1 hour Reading Eggs is not only a great activity for students to work on during centers, but it is also a great resource for teachers. Learn how to manage your students, access data, and utilize the teacher's resources.  There are hundreds of books to share on your SMARTBoard, a variety of activity sheets, and interactive presentations to share with your students. Close Reading Strategies in Science/Social Studies/Math Grades 3-5 Date: Tuesday, November 4, 2014 Time: 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: Media Center, VDV Presenter: Jessica Warner, Literacy Coach Credit Hours: 1 hour Learn to implement Close Reading strategies across the content areas to improve students comprehension of the text. Using Daily 5 During Guided Reading Grades 3-5 Date: Thursday, November 13, 2014 Time: 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: Media Center, VDV Presenter: Christine Birnbaum, Literacy Coach Credit Hours: 1 hour The Daily 5 is a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. Students using the program will develop independence, stamina, and accountability as well as independence in the classroom. Make and Take Fundations Centers Grades K-2 Date: Wednesday, December 3, 2014 Time: 3:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. Location: Media Center, VDV Presenter: Jessica Warner, Literacy Coach Credit Hours: 1 hour Decoding, encoding, fluency, vocabulary development and comprehension contribute to a successful reader. This workshop will review the steps of the MacBook Intermediate class. The workshop will then focus on utilizing the iLife Suite (iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, Garbage Band) in order to create authentic assessments that allow for student creativity. Analyzing Your Student’s F & P Levels to Regroup Grades K-5 Date: Wednesday, January 21, 2015 Time: 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: Media Center, VDV Presenter: Jessica Warner, Literacy Coach Credit Hours: 1 hour Participants will be provided with useful strategies to analyze their students’ Fountas and Pinnell levels to regroup during Guided Reading and/or Literature Circle instructions. Effective Literature Circle Strategies Grades K-5 Date: Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Time: 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: Media Center, VDV Presenter: Christine Birnbaum, Literacy Coach Credit Hours:1 hour Literature circles engage students in rich conversations about shared readings. Students can express their opinions, predictions, and questions about a text in a productive, structured way. Learn about the different roles students take on during Literature Circles, such as summarizer or discussion director, which are designed to develop reading, speaking, and thinking abilities.
