  1. Music – Marie’s class • Provide opportunities for children to explore and develop their musical intelligence. • Date: 10/17/12 Prepared by: Pam • Context • When we first talked about the pumpkins and gourds at the science table, Marie told us that one of the gourds can be dried out and used as a maraca.   • Objectives • To participate in a musical experience. To explore ways to make sounds using our bodies and a musical instrument. • Materials/Resources available • Maracas • Experience • We explored the ways to make sounds with the maracas, such as loud and soft and shaking them in a circle. Marie showed us that her maraca did not make any sound. We discussed why not (It was broken.), how to repair it, and what we could put inside to make it work again. • Skills practiced • Fine motor skills, creative expression, problem solving Be: I can move it (the maraca) without making any sound. Wh: We could use smashed up pieces of jewelry (inside the broken maraca). Li: A maraca is a ball with a stick in it that makes a sound when you shake it.

  2. We try shaking the maracas with only our legs. Follow up ideas Repair the broken maraca. Make our own maracas using materials that children suggested.
