  1. 1-23-13 Ratio and Proportion Drawing Essential Question: What is a scale factor and what effect does it have on a drawing? BOP: What is the area of a 2 in by 2 in square? DWP

  3. 3rd Quarter Project Requirements: Follow the directions below to redraw the cartoon picture you have chosen into a larger picture, and then answer the questions. Setting up the Grid: 1. Cut out your cartoon in the shape of a rectangle and glue it to a piece of centimeter graph paper. 2. Cut the centimeter graph paper into a rectangle so that it contains your picture, but gets rid of the extra grids. 3. Using a ruler, trace the grid lines over your cartoon both vertically and horizontally.

  4. 4. Label the squares along the x-axis 1,2,3, etc … until you know exactly how many squares are across your picture. 5. Label the squares along the y-axis 1, 2, 3 etc….until you know exactly how many squares are across your picture. 6. For every square on your cartoon you need an enlarged square on your 18 x 24 piece of construction paper. The scale we will use is 1 cm = 2 in.

  5. 7. Count how many squares are covered on your actual cartoon to determine the area in square centimeters. You may need to put partially filled squares together to make one square centimeter. How many squares (square centimeters) do you estimate are filled in by your cartoon character? RECORD THIS NUMBER IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!

  6. 7. Take your piece of construction paper, turn it horizontal and then use your ruler to mark 2 inch intervals all along the top. 8. Slide your ruler half way down the paper and repeat step 7. Slide your ruler all the way to the bottom and repeat step 7 again. 9. Now using your ruler, connect the vertical marks you made at the 2-inch intervals. Your paper should look like this:

  7. 10. Turn your paper vertical and repeat the process again (Steps 7 – 9). Your paper should look like this.

  8. Starting the Drawing: 1. Choose a square on the centimeter grid (your cartoon). Locate the corresponding grid square on the 18 x 24 in piece of paper. 2. Study where the cartoon lines are drawn in the centimeter grid. 3. Copy the lines in the large grid. Try very hard to make them cover the same amount of area and have the lines enter and exit the square at the same location. 4. Continue until your picture is completed. 5. Color your completed picture.

  9. Summary: Don’t forget to write your minimum three sentence summary answering today’s essential question here! HW: Work on your project – Due No Later Than Friday, February 1st! (10 Bonus points for turning it in early!)
