  1. ECOLOGY

  2. What is Ecology? • Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms & their environment.

  3. Biotic vs. Abiotic Factors • Biosphere– portion of the Earth supporting life • Within the biosphere you have the following factors: • A. Biotic factors – Living things 1. All organisms inhabiting the environment 2. Each organism adapts to its part of the biosphere • B. Abiotic factors 1. Nonliving parts of the environment 2. Can determine which species will survive EX: rainfall, temperature, light, soil

  4. Abiotic Factors Biotic Factors ECOSYSTEM

  5. C. Levels of Biological Organization • Populations a. A group of organisms of the same species living together b. Must compete for resources • Community a. Several populations that interact b. Changes in 1 population will cause changes in the others • Ecosystem a. Interactions between populations & their surroundings b. 2 main types: 1. Terrestrial – land 2. Aquatic – fresh or salt water

  6. Levels of Biological Organization

  7. D. Niche vs. Habitat • Niche *The role an organism plays in the environment *(its “job” in the community) • Habitat *Place where an organism lives 3 species of warblers & their niches Cape May Warbler Feeds at the tips of branches near the top of the tree Bay-Breasted Warbler Feeds in the middle part of the tree Yellow-Rumped Warbler Feeds in the lower part of the tree and at the bases of the middle branches Spruce tree

  8. Feeding Types &Types of Feeding Relationships • Autotrophs a. Self-feeders (produce their own food) b. EX: plants, algae • Heterotrophs a. Depend on other organisms for food b. Herbivore – eats ONLY plants c. Carnivore – eats ONLY meat d. Omnivore – eats BOTH

  9. Decomposersa. Break down & absorb nutrients from dead organisms b. EX: mushrooms, bacteria • Commensalism a. Relationship in which one species benefits & the other is not affected b. EX: remoras that live on/around a shark’s mouth bacteria Remora on a Ray

  10. tickbirds • Mutualism a. Both species benefit b. EX: tickbirds eat parasites off of a rhino • Parasitism a. One organism benefits & the other is harmed b. Example: tapeworm living inside a person’s intestine oxpeckers

  11. Ticket out the doorEcology day 1You need half a sheet of paper

  12. 1. A tick sucking your blood making you sick would be an example of ? a. commensalism b. mutualism c. parasitism d. none of these • 2. Trees, mosses and shrubs are all examples of what type of factor? a. abiotic b. biotic c. commensalic d. mutualistic • The study of interactions between organisms and their environments is called ? a. botany b. cytology c. ecology d. zoology • If you work at McDonald’s, that is an example of your? a. habitat b. niche c. surroundings d. biosphere • A group of deer that live in a forest is an example of a? a. biosphere b. community c. population d. individual
