  5. Philosophy and Expectations All students will gain an interest and improve their knowledge and appreciation of science. Basic Expectations of students: • Students are expected to be on time and prepared for class every day. • Students are expected to put forth effort in order to master all objectives. • Students are expected to turn in assignments on time • Students are expected to follow all class and school policies outlined in the student handbook.

  6. Grading A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: <60 • Assessment (tests, quizzes, projects, lab explanations) 80% • Classwork/homework/participation 20%

  7. Homework Policy • Homework includes reviewing concepts, notes, and objectives. • Homework will typically be the result of classwork not being finished during class time.

  8. Absences • Participation and collaboration are essential in science. • Missed labs may require utilizing lunch time or before/after school to make up. • Students are given an equal number of days to their absences to complete make-up work. • It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work from the website, a group member, a classmate, or me.

  9. Academic Support-Learning Lab • Learning Lab (Before School): • Mon-Fri 7:30-8:00 • After school- Tuesday/Thursday-3:30-4:30 • An opportunity for students to work, study, and read • Permission slips obtained from teacher Content area teachers are available for one-on-one assistance

Online Grade/Coursework Access • I plan to communicate frequently (monthly emails) • Access coursework from class period specific Google Classroom (sign-up codes on my Altadena Website) • Website updated at least weekly to show agenda and upcoming assignments • Grades will be updated as quickly as possible and this depends on assignment type

Course of Study • Courses are taught by a content specialist (GATE teacher) • GATE coursework is available in all four core areas • English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies courses based upon grade level standards with extension/enrichment • Opportunities for high school math credit • Two electives of choice

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum • Updated curriculum guides for all GATE courses • address challenge, complexity, choice and control • provide extension and enrichment • consistency across schools • collaboration between teachers • Syllabus for each course showing expectations and learning outcomes • Learning compacts are in place for participation in GATE courses to ensure courses are rigorous

  17. Criteria for Placement • Initial placement of students as they transition into 6th grade includes • Identification in one or more areas of giftedness AND/OR • Multiple measures of high ability (e.g., AzMERIT proficiency, classroom grades, teacher recommendation) • Full criteria available at https://www.kyrene.org/AdvPlacement • Subsequent course placements are defined by the course of study
