  8. *NOTES* ISLAM = one of the world’s most practiced religions that means surrender to the will of GOD (ALLAH IN ARABIC) ORIGINS: * Mohammad (founder) spoke to Angel Gabriel and became a prophet and recorded Gabriel’s messages in the KORAN, or Qu’ran (holy book). * Followers are Muslims who practice the religion of Islam. House of Worship: Mosque * Clergyman or Clergywoman: Called an Imam

Mohammad The Prophet • Born 570 AD in Mecca – Died June 8, 632 Medina • Central figure of Islam • Messenger and prophet of God • Greatest law bearer of all prophets • Brought up by his uncle • Married at age 25 and worked as a merchant • Unhappy with life in Mecca, he went to a cave in the mountains for meditation. • Muslims believe that age 40 in the month of Ramadan, that he received his first revelation from God. • Preaching begins • Unites the tribes, who then conquered Mecca.

  10. *NOTES* FIVE PILLARS OF Faith WHAT IS A PILLAR??? IMPORTANT BELIEFS & VALUES 1. Recite during prayer “There is NO God, but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet” 5. Visit Mecca at least once in their lifetime 2. Pray five times a day facing Mecca 4. Fast during the holy month of Ramadan 3. Give to the poor MUSLIMS DO NOT GAMBLE, DRINK ALCOHOL OR EAT PORK

  11. There are rituals that Muslims must perform before prayer. This (Al Wudu') is the cleaning of the hands, mouth, and face three times with running water, then the washing of both arms to the elbows (starting with the right), also three times. This is followed by cleaning the ears and behind the ears, followed by the top of the head, and then both feet. The area where the prayer is taking place must also be clean. Muslims recite from the Koran and also perform personal prayers. Muslims must stand erect, head down, hands at sides and feet evenly spaced. They must also be sure their rug is facing in the direction of the holy city of Mecca. Prayer is taken seriously and most Muslims devout themselves to this second pillar of Islam.
