John Bercow. The Speaker of the House of Commons. What the speaker does. M ain job is to keep order in the House. Its like refereeing a football match, you can’t favour either side and has to make sure everyone gets a turn with the ball.

  2. What the speaker does • Main job is to keep order in the House. Its like refereeing a football match, you can’t favour either side and has to make sure everyone gets a turn with the ball. • Smaller jobs are to run the house of commons commission which makes sure that everyone gets paid. • Meets and greets important people such as the Queen or President Obama.

  3. We asked him some questions • Do you vote when there is an election? No, not unless there is a tie. • What did you want to do when you were 10? I wanted to play tennis professionally. • When did you first want to become the speaker?I wanted to become the speaker in 2003 when my friend gave me the idea.

  4. What was the most important debate you have ever taken part in? The most important debate I had every been involved in was the Burden Park Stadium collapse which resulted in 33 deaths and over 400 injuries. • How often do people argue with you in the chamber? Not very often but 3 times I have had to send people out. • Do you get nervous before big debate? Not very often but there have been a few occasions.

  5. I’m not the shortest speaker! John Bercow he made a big point in saying that he was not the shortest speaker and that John Bussy (speaker 1394-1398) was in fact shorter than him. Could have been because he was beheaded!
