  2. DVD Cessation Classes • Purpose: • Alternative to Group Cessation • Objectives: • To create a TV/DVD cessation pilot program • To increase our enrollment and participation rates, targeting males 18 – 39 years

  3. Background • Low male enrollment • How could we get them into class? • Survey them! • Conducted one-on-one interviews with 49 males • Ages: 18-39 years

  4. Findings Years of School Completed 24.5% under 12 years 55% 12 years 20.5% over 12 years Annual Income 42% under $14,999 27% $15,000-$24,999 31% $25,000 and over

  5. Findings (cont’d) 67% had ever tried to quit, majority used CT 58% would use CT again (CT=cold turkey) Approximately 30% or less would (yes, maybe, don’t know) try some type of TV show, online, or video stop smoking program The majority of these males got their information from friends, radio, newspaper, bar, and TV-respectively 96% never heard of MCTUPP

  6. Creation and Development • Had a Thought?? • Bring cessation into the home via TV • Who rules the TV clicker? • Hired a DVD Filming Company • Talented and Willing Staff

  7. View DVD • Session One - Am I Ready to Quit? (2:20min) • Session Two – How to Manage Stress? (2:06) • Session Three – Overcoming Obstacles (2:41) • Session Four – Keeping the Support (7:25) • Session Five – Staying Quit (22:40)

  8. Protocol for TV Viewers • Complete an information form. • Complete CIF (canary yellow only) including date of birth. If they just want a quit kit or information only, do not complete a CIF. • In order to enroll in the US Script voucher program, the client must come to the MCTUPP offices with an Arizona identification card. • Explain voucher process and that the client will receive a page of instructions for using the voucher along with TV cessation instruction for viewing programs. • Clients need to watch the show every week to get vouchers, or talk w/ McTUPP • Each week caller must answer three out of the five questions correctly. • If two or more questions are answered incorrectly, instruct the caller to watch another airing of that week’s episode and call back. If no other episodes are available to view that week, the caller must receive intensive counseling from McTUPP covering the episode topics. • (A show outline and copy of each episode will be given to all locations.) • Viewers are not eligible for NRT vouchers if they start viewing after the first two episodes. Instruct them to attend a class or refer to MCTUPP. • If a counselor is unavailable, instruct the client that a counselor will return the call.
