  2. QUESTIONS Big Question: What brought people to Clinton Township? • Sub-Questions: • Who came? • When did they come? • Why did they come? • How did they come? • What were the effects of these people on the Clinton Township?

  3. Who came? • Moravians • Immigrants (mostly Irish, German, Polish, Italian, English, and French) • War veterans from wars fought in North America • Japanese Americans

  4. When did they come? • Moravians and Indians came in 1782. • Irish Immigrants came in 1845. • War veterans came after they fought in the various wars. • Japanese Americans came in 1943.

  5. Why Did They Come? • Moravians came to convert Indians. • Irish immigrants came to work on the canal to run from Kalamazoo to Clinton Township. • War veterans came to live peacefully after the war. • Japanese Americans came to work in the rose gardens of Paul Weiss and to live outside of the internment camps.

  6. How did they come? People used the following methods of transportation: Clinton River System Wagons Rail Roads Old map of what the Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal would have looked like if finished.

  7. What were the effects of these people? • Moravians cleared a lot of land and converted Indians. • Irish helped dig canal. Many Irish still remain. • Mills were created and more forest was destroyed. • Clinton Township use to be the largest producer of roses in the state.
