  2. Promote multi-sector cooperation in addressing environmental problems in CA at the local, national, and regional levels

CAREC’s role in the region • Bridging Europe, Asia and Pacific environmental processes; • Independent and neutral platform and catalyst for co-operation on SD issues within CA and beyond; • Contribute Global, Regional, European and Asian environmental initiatives through the own activities; • Support Central Asian Initiatives: CAI and Green Bridge Initiative; • Develop mutually beneficial cooperation with partners for service provision in the region

CAREC activities in climate change and sustainable energy • Targeted Awareness Raising for Enhanced European Union –Central Asia Partnership, Component III (2011-2013) - EU • Integrated Approach for the Development of Low Carbon Development Strategies in Central Asia (2012-2013) - Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany • Promoting Adaption and Mitigation Strategies on Climate Change in Central Asia - IGES • Covenant of Mayors Central Asia - EU

CAREC activities in water resources management • Stakeholders’ partnerships in collaborative policymaking: Fostering transboundary cooperation on small watersheds in Central Asia (2012 – 2015) – USAID • Targeted Awareness Raising for Enhanced European Union –Central Asia Partnership, Component I (2011-2013) - EU • Support the efforts of local initiatives on water in Central Asia (2011 – 2014) - Ministry of Nature Protection of Norway • Supporting Water Management and Strengthening Transboundary river basin administrations in Central Asia(EURECA 2009, WMBOCA, Lot 1) • "Capacity building on river basin planning for water management organizations and joint river basin structures"(EURECA 2009, WMBOCA, lot 2)

Promotion of SEIS  in Central Asia within the EU - AWARE and Swiss funded projects • Interministerial Working Group (IWG) on environmental information, data and statistics in Kyrgyzstan (February - March 2012 ) • Working group meetings of IWG with participation of representatives of OECD, EEA, UNDP (January, April, May 2012) • National seminars for national authorities and experts on gaps and possibilities for better environmental governance in CA, including SEIS (Kyrgyzstan – 21 May, Uzbekistan -17 September, Tajikistan – 16 October, Kazakhstan – 25 October, 2012) • Join action plan on improvement water and waste statistics in Kyrgyzstan in Kyrgyzstan (CAREC, Finish Environmental Institute, OECD, UNDP) • National Reports on needs assessment for implementation of SEISin CA (5 reports)

CAREC further steps Implementingand introduction the principles of the Basin planning for small transboundary rivers Piloting the best practices for water-production and efficiency to the local population Economic aspects of climate change Energy-Environment Sectors in countries Assessment of Assessments on air, climate change, biodiversity and waste in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan MONECA: translating the SEIS principles into practice and policies of managing environmental information in Central Asia Implementation of the recommendations of the national consultations on SEIS
