  3. City Life • The newcomers to the city have created a severe housing crisis. • Slums are a common sight in cities now. • Despite the obstacles people encounter in cities, people still continue to move there. • Often times, even the slums of the cities are better than poor rural life.

  4. Rural Life • In poorer countries, most of the people still live in rural areas. • Farming life is extremely hard • Homes are one-room shacks with thatched or tin roofs. • Constant threats to rural life include hunger and disease. • The literacy rate is very low. • Tenant farmers – landless peasants who work on large estates. In exchange for their labor, they get a small plot of land to farm for themselves. They end up being tied to the land by virtue of debts to the landowner which accrue over time.

  5. Rural Life • Effects of Rural Modernization • MNCs have come in and modernized the rural farmland • This has increased output of food and export crops • Negatives • Produce food for export and not local markets • Locally grown food is sold at high prices due to low supply • Due to growth of cities, governments focus their efforts there and neglect the rural areas

  6. Family Characteristics • Strong family bond • Men usually dominate family • Parents expect complete obedience from their children • Rural: followed more closely • Children work the fields • Urban: children have greater opportunities due to schooling options • Young adults/children do not work fields • There are no fields

  7. Women • Traditionally, subservient and expected to have children • Illiteracy rate is higher among women than men • Female participation in society is on the rise

  8. Migration • Millions of people have migrated to El Norte (United States) • People do this to escape political persecution and find economic success
