Tourism • The main cities for tourism in Jamaica are Ocho Rios, Kingston, Montego Bay, and Port Antonio • Ranked within the top 5 worlds most favorite tourist destinations. • Some popular sites are the Oracabessa Bay outside of Ocho Rios which is where James Bonds beach scenes were filmed. All the beaches and gardens are popular attractions • Events in Jamaica come with Beauty pageants with Miss Jamaica and Miss Jamaica Universe. The pushcart derby is a popular sporting event held every August in Jamaica where homeade carts that are used for street vending, to transport items or as a racing cart take part in races like the American soap box races. The carts have been clocked up to 60 miles per hour. The venue is at Kaiser’s Sports Club for the finals of the derby. • National Heroes Park Memorial is a memorial botanical garden in Kingston. The memorial features burial sites of many of Jamaica’s National Heroes, Prime Ministers, and cultural leaders. • The Green Grotto Caves are show caves and a big attraction in Discovery Bay, St Ann on the north coast. They are named for the green algae that cover its walls. The chambers have been carved by tides and waves with two well-defined levels apparently indicating two periods with differing sea-levels. • The Milk River Bath is a mineral spa in the southwest corner in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica. It opened in 1794 and now has 6 public baths and a hotel with 20 bedrooms. It claims that its warm waters are more radioactive than some notable spas. It is said that during the 17th century a slave. After suffering bad beating from his master and left for dead, returned a while later fully recovered. His master made a deal with him saying he wouldn’t punish him again if he showed him here he got healed and it was the Milk River Bath.

CLIMATE OF JAMAICA • Jamaica has a tropical maritime climate. • Coastal temperatures average a near-constant 80F to 86F year-round. • Annual rainfall averages 78 inches. • Although Jamaica lies in the Caribbean “hurricane belt”, relatively few hurricanes touch it. Officially the hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30; August and September are peak months.

GEOGRAPHY • Jamaica is 90 miles south of Cuba and 118 miles west of Haiti. 235 kilometers long (size of Kansas) and 34 and 84 kilometers wide. • is the largest island of the Commonwealth Caribbean and the third largest of the Greater Antilles, after Cuba and Hispaniola. • Has a lot of small islands and a number of cays which are low islands and reefs • Jamaica's geology and landforms evolved from ancient volcanoes that rose from the sea millions of years ago. • Still has mountains, valleys, plateaus, and costal plains.

People and History • When found by Chris Columbus after Spain, white settlers were the first to live in Jamaica. • In 1660 the population of Jamaica was about 4,500 whites and just 1,500 blacks. • When the English took over Jamaica in 1655 the Spanish colonists fled and the slaves were freed and settled in the mountains with the Tainos. The slaves ended up fighting a war against the british in the 18th century establishing their freedom for generations. • The Population in the 2001 census, was consistently African descent and was 2.5 million people. • They have 2 ethnic groups with the Akan and the Igbo. There are also multiracial Jamaicans of Indian and Chinese ancestry that make up 160,000 of the population. The last 3,000-4,000 part is Lebanese, Syrian, English, Scottish, Irish, and German Jamaicans. • Immigration in Jamaica has increased over the years coming from China, Haiti, Cuba, Colombia and other Latin America Countries. • About 7,000 Americans do reside in Jamaica.
