  1. COLLOQUIUM Dr. Thomas Ramos Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Star Wars: The X-Ray Laser Program Abstract When President Reagan announced his Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), an initiative dubbed as Star Wars by the press, he expressed his intent to protect America from nuclear destruction by constructing a shield that would destroy Russian missiles carrying nuclear weapons before they reached American soil. The largest single program in SDI was the x-ray laser program, a weapon system designed to destroy missiles with blasts from a laser system, pumped by a thermo-nuclear explosion in space, that emitted x-rays. This talk will describe the origins of the x-ray laser design and will trace its history as it was being developed as a weapon in the American arsenal. 3-4 p.m., Friday, October 13thMcLane Hall 162 All welcome!
