  1. What else do they use/read/view? How did they manage without your new design? How many users are there? What age are they? What are they interested in? What will the customer get in return for his/her investment? What are they trying to achieve? How many times a day will the user use the object? How much will your customer give you for solving this design problem? Are the users different from the customers? Who else could solve the problem?

  2. How many usersare there What age are they Who is my target audience Stairway to answers What book type would sell best for your company; fiction or non-fiction? We only publish non-fiction. My books would be of historical/scientific interest. How well would these type of books sell for you in general? FD books are difficult to sell. Academic readership. Very specific audience targeting required. General advertising not particularly beneficial. Target, target, target. Would you know the age bracket of the people that would mostly buy from this genre? Third level students tend to access texts through university library subscriptions. Older, third-level teachers more likely to purchase books directly. We plan to make our books available electronically for Kindle, iPad, etc in coming months. This may change the age profile. Questionnaire answered by Field Day publications

  3. Academic readership Specific target audience Specific target audience Specific target audience But this is based on the idea that this would be the typical generic text heavy book…I don’t intend mine to be like that What to do ? ? ? I’ve updated my questionnaire since to find answers more specific to me. I’m still waiting on the replies…

  4. What else do they use/read/view How many times a day will the user use the object This project will not just be a book…it’s just the core of a massive campaign I want to unleash! Bus stop posters, smart phone apps, magazine articles, information texts, t-shirts, mugs…I want this everywhere for all people to see! Because I want my users to be anyone who loves reading to those who respond well to strong visual campaigns… I would expect that, like myself, they would use the internet, television and anything else they see around them, like poster campaigns to gather information of interest to them. Bring back the love of history Bring it back.

  5. How did they manage without your new design Where before, most of us couldn’t be specific on where we thought we came from…now, with my highly visual, fashionable book, new topics of conversation and debates will be born. I want people to realise that knowledge is a gift and that all of us should be keen to spread it around…be the one to boost social evolution to a whole new level! Those who studied evolutionary biology or anthropology would of course know the amazing story of our origins but what really..do the public know of how language evolved? What were the stages of development between ape and human? Why are we so much more evolved mentally than any other animal? Knowledge weighs nothing

  6. I think the people who would be interested in my campaign are those who enjoy learning new things. They are interested in exploring the beauty of our species and its origins. They are interested in where we’ve come from, where we are and where we’re going… What are they interested in What are they trying to achieve Whether they are aware of it or not…my customers/users will achieve a deeper knowledge of the world we live in and every animal that lives off it. They can hold their head high and spark invigorating and debatable conversations with their friends and family…and the wider community. Life is everything

  7. Are the users different from the customers Yes. My customers will be those who purchase my book, posters, key rings, t-shirts, mugs and any other merchandise I release. My users are those who will see my billboard campaigns, see my short information animation and perhaps student whose libraries have my book in stock Learn something new every day

  8. How much will your customer give you for solving this design problem Take, for example, a highly illustrated hardback book with neat blocks of text. 100 pages and 20 by 20 cms in size. How much roughly, would it cost to produce one of these? There are many, many variables: Size of print run, paper quality, binding style and quality, digital or traditional printers used?, colour or b/w illustrations?, self-made or stock agency illustrations?, graphic designer or self-designed? Expect to pay €10K for 500 top of the production range , and work down from there. Remember in your calculations that booksellers are unlikely to take a book for less than 40% discount on retail price. A sales rep will also be required and will charge a fee/commission. Consider also postal charges if online/amazon orders are made. The art of intelligent conversation Questionnaire answered by Field Day publications

  9. What will the customer get in return for his/her investment The customer will have a fashionable, clear cut explanation of the origin of our species. Each page of my book flows into the next with clever layouts and funky illustrations. They will gain a large volume of knowledge which, hopefully, will inspire them to explore the topic more and more. This is a must have book for any modern bookshelf and a source of great conversation and debate topics. God or Darwin… Are those our only choices?

  10. Who else could solve the problem I would imagine, the well known evolutionary biologists, Richard Dawkins for one, could rival my book well. His books read very well and all he would need to do is hire a good typographer and graphic designer to fancy his work up a bit. I suppose his main obstacle would be that he leave his atheist views aside and produce the information just as it is. People have the right to read something and decide for themselves if they believe that Darwin’s theory is absolutely the only reason for our incredible evolution. They can believe in a bit of both. My book is just about celebrating the wonder of our origins,. Ever wonder why we have a tailbone at the end of our spine?

  11. Originally I was thinking about just writing a book…now I want to do all this… This has equipped me with many ideas on where I can take this project My research has taken me to all corners of the evolutionary process; tool development, the significance of discovering fire and how to tame it language, emotions, social interactions, family units, eugenics and DNA.
