  2. Carbon • All life is based on carbon • Carbon is part of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and other important molecules.

  3. Process • Photosynthesis: Autotrophs use energy from the sun, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and release oxygen. • Respiration: Autotrophs and Heterotrophs must break down glucose into a useable form of energy (ATP)

  4. Carbon Cycle: Part 1 • 1. Carbon cycle begins with autotrophs • 2. Autotrophs produce glucose through photosynthesis. • 3. Heterotrophs feed on autotrophs directly or indirectly. • 4. Heterotrophs use those carbon molecules for growth and energy

  5. Carbon Cycle: Part 2 • 5. When autotrophs and heterotrophs use the carbon molecules and release energy, carbon dioxide is released and returns to the atmosphere. • 6. Carbon dioxide continually cycles as it is located in soil, leaves, roots, oil, coal, and fossils

Carbon Cycle 3 • Carbon returns to Earth through respiration, excretion, and decomposition • Animals release carbon dioxide when they decompose or respire • Burning wood and fuel excretes carbon into the atmosphere • Decomposing animals and plants leach carbon into the ground, forming fossil fuels such as coal or oil
