  2. SUMMARY OF HOW THE PRE-TEST WAS CONDUCTED • We have conducted 100 interviews for the cognitive test and the target group was the population aged 5 years and over for both sexes. The interviews were conducted both in the rural and urban areas.

  3. SAMPLING METHOD • We adopted purposive sampling method during the interview. We targeted 25 people with disabilities and the remaining 75 was the non – disable population. But during the interviews we come across people whom we thought did not have disabilities but during the interview they reported to have some form disabilities notably seeing difficulty.

  4. FINDINGS FROM COGNITIVE PROBES, INTERVIEWER DEBRIEFING • The respondents were cooperative, but most of them reported that questions of this nature, it is only the individual concerned who can answer it correctly, that being the case they are afraid that most the responses we will be getting will be Don’t Know for the proxy questions or I think. Some of the respondents with disabilities reported that, they hope after this survey something will be done to improve their livelihoods, as they have been interviewed over and over and they have not seen anything.

  5. Observation • My observation was, most of the respondents thought the problem of remembering and concentrating is associated with mental disorder and by looking at the responses we got from the field shows that.

Type of responses • He is very focused • He does not have such a problem • I have never seen him behave abnormally • He is normal • She does not have difficulty remembering or concentrating • He can remember lot things that have passed • She has a good memory • I am not absent minded • I have no mental problem

  7. Self Report • 71. I have a problem concentrating or remembering for more than 10 minutes • This man was trying to explain if he tries to recall an event or an activity or concentrate on a particular issue after 10 minutes, his mind went to something else • 33. At times I loose concentration or forget certain things

  8. Self Report – Contd. • She means at times you could be talking to her and her mind is on something else. Also at times she wants to do a particular activity within a very short time; she forgets what she was supposed to • 40. At times I have difficulty remembering certain past events • When he is discussing with friends or his family members on a past event, at times, he finds it difficult to remember that past events.

  9. Proxy Report • At times I loose concentration or forget certain things • He means at times you could be talking to him and his mind is on something else. Also at times he wants to do a particular activity within a very short time; she forgets what she was supposed to do • 43. Because she has a mental problem

  10. Proxy Report – Contd. • The respondent said the lady will have some difficulty remembering or concentrating because she has a mental disorder • 52. He has learning difficulty and so he has difficulty remembering or concentrating • The respondent said the boy has some learning difficulty and so he might have some difficulty remembering or concentrating

  11. Field Test • We have conducted 302 interviews. One hundred and forty eight in the rural areas and 154 in the urban areas. • Among the respondents who reported to have some form of disability, 36 percent reported to be taken modern medicine, 32 percent traditional medicine, 20 percent marabout/spiritual and 11 percent rehabilitation services

  12. Field Test Contd. • Of those who reported to they are not taken any treatment or rehabilitation services, 7 percent reported they cannot see at all, 4 percent reported they can’t hear at all, 4 percent they can’t walk at all, 3 percent reported they can’t remember or concentrate at all.

Field Test Cont. • Those who reported are not taken rehabilitation services, 10 percent reported are not aware of the facility, 3 percent reported not available, 3 percent reported facility not available, 36 percent reported they don’t think anything can be done and 48 percent reported they don’t need any services

Field Test Cont. • Regarding difficulty moving around the community, 21 percent reported road surfaces, 8 percent reported pavements, 4 percent reported gutters, 18 percent reported traffic, 17 percent reported social attitudes, 14 percent reported lack of personal support and 14 percent reported lack of equipment or aid
