  1. SOLAR ENERGY& Heat Transfer(6-4-7)(6-5.5) Mrs. Bright BRMS 6th Grade

  2. 6-4.7 • Explain how solar energy affects Earth’s atmosphere and surface (land & water). 6-5.5 Illustrate the directional transfer of heat energy through convection, radiation, and conduction.

  3. 1.Where does solar energy come from? • 1. The SUNis the driving energy source for heating Earth.

  4. 2. What is ‘heat transfer’? • Heat transfer is movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object. • Ice Demo

  5. 3. How does heat move? • 1.Radiation • Through empty space • 2. Conduction By contact • 3. Convection • Currents in liquids and gasses

  6. 3. Heat Transfer

  7. Heat Transfer

  8. RADIATION Campfires Radiant heaters

  9. Heat Transfer

  10. CONDUCTION

  11. CONDUCTION

  12. Heat Transfer

  13. CONVECTION is the transfer of heat by the movement of the heated substance itself. • Water boiling in a pot creates convection currents in the water. Convection Conduction

  14. What type of heat transfer is taking place?

  15. Very Good! Radiation

  16. What type of heat transfer is taking place?

  17. Very Good! Convection

  18. What type of heat transfer is taking place?

  19. Very Good! Conduction

  20. What type of energy transfer is taking place?

  21. Good! Radiation

  22. What type of energy transfer is cooking these hot dogs?

  23. Very Good! Conduction

  24. What type of energy transfer is taking place?

  25. Good!! Conduction Again!!!!

  26. SUMMARY

  27. http://3typesofheattransfer2.blogspot.com/

  28. 4. Energy from the sun can be absorbed & converted to heat or it can be reflected. 5. Solar energy can be absorbed or reflected by gases and clouds in the atmosphere and by land or water.

  29. 6The sun heats the Earth UNEVENLY! It has to travel through more atmosphere at the poles then at the equator. What does this mean? And it is spread out more at the poles.

  30. The Poles are alwayscolder. The equator is always warmer

  31. Temperature Variations • Seasons • Sun’s rays do not strike surface evenly because the Earth is tilted on its axis. • Land • Heats up and cools down quicker than water. • Water • Heats slower and cools slower then the land.

  32. . 7. Land heats up quickly during the day & loses heat energy quickly at night. noaa.gov

  33. 8. Water heats up slowly and releases heat energy slowly. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/educate/seabreeze.shtml

  34. Land heats quickly, think about the beach. On a sunny day the sand burns your feet and the ocean feels cool to your feet.

  35. AT night the sand will feel cool to sit in and the ocean warm to walk in. http://www.dazzlewallpapers.com

  36. 9. The water on Earth helps to regulate the temperature of the Troposphere.. http://www.maps-pacific.com/

  37. GREENHOUSE EFFECT

  38. GREENHOUSE Effect • 10. There are some gases in the atmosphere that trap the heat that is being radiated from the Earth back into the atmosphere.. • 11. This trapping of radiated heat is called the Greenhouse Effect & its causing a thinning of the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
