  5. Continuing Medical Education The Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons has been surveyed by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and has been awarded accreditation as a sponsor of continuing medical education for physicians

  6. Expanding Access Program • Continuing Medical Education Program sponsored by the Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. • 10 hours of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award • Target Population: Hispanic physicians and physicians who serve the Hispanic community.

  7. Educational Objectives • Provide private-practice Hispanic primary care physicians with the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to correctly screen, test, and counsel their patients for HIV infection; detect and change private-practice Hispanic primary care physicians’ negative attitudes towards homosexuality, drug addiction, and other HIV/AIDS-related issues; and increase the number of private-practice Hispanic primary care physicians who are willing to learn more about HIV/AIDS in order to begin managing patients with this disease.

Program Visits • FIRST VISIT - HIV / AIDS etiology, pathogenesis, natural history, and epidemiology (emphasizing epidemiological data corresponding to the area served by the physician). • SECOND VISIT - HIV / AIDS screening: risk assessment (taking sexual and drug histories), recognition of early signs and symptoms of HIV infection (general lymphadenopathy, Kaposi’s sarcoma, hairy leucoplakia, etc.,), principles of HIV / AIDS patient education in the office setting

Program Visits • THIRD VISIT - HIV / AIDS testing and pre- and post-test counseling, universal precautions for prevention of HIV transmission in health care settings, management of HIV occupational exposure. • FOURTH VISIT - HIV / AIDS local services and resources, general principles of HIV / AIDS medical management.
