  2. Artemisinin • Artemisinin • Used in Chinese medicine • From the plant Artemisia annua • Used in the treatment of malaria • Kills Plasmodium, and stops it reproducing inside the Mosquito • However only active for a few hours

  3. ACT • ACT is used where the parasite has developed a resistance to particular antimalarials • Synthesised Arteminsinin last longer in the body and is cheaper to produce • Can also be used in the treatment on cancer

  4. Taxol • Isolated from the Pacific yew tree • Used in the treatments of some cancers, as it stops the cells from dividing • It is a slow growing tree, only a small amount of taxol can be extracted which kills the tree in the process • PACLITAXEL found in needles of European Yew Tree • Producing enough Paclitaxel to meet the demand is costly
