  1. Welcome to “Parenting by the Book” Church of Christ in Champions

  2. Aim of this Class • We are fellow learners striving to be the primary faith trainers of our children • We will follow the schedule on the handout • Dr. Rosemond’s book will guide our discussion • You can purchase the book after class today ($20).

  3. Important Questions? • Why is parenting so important? • Why is parenting so challenging? • What do you want for your children? • What does God want for your children?

  4. Deut 6: 4-9 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

  5. Psalm 78: 1-8 1 My people, hear my teaching;    listen to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth with a parable;    I will utter hidden things, things from of old— 3 things we have heard and known,    things our ancestors have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their descendants;    we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,    his power, and the wonders he has done. 5 He decreed statutes for Jacob    and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors    to teach their children,

  6. Psalm 78: 1-8 6 so the next generation would know them,    even the children yet to be born,    and they in turn would tell their children. 7 Then they would put their trust in God    and would not forget his deeds    but would keep his commands. 8 They would not be like their ancestors—    a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God,    whose spirits were not faithful to him.

  7. Proverbs 22:6 6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

  8. Mark 12: 28-31 28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”    29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

  9. Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  10. Ephesians 6:4 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
