  1. WAEA TC SID and Recent Developments in LCDs and OLEDs 1/22/2008 Larry Iboshi, Imagik International

  2. SID - Society for Information Display • From Osaka to Eindhoven, you will find colleagues passionately involved in display and display-system design, integration, marketing, display standards, manufacturing, human factors, applications, and R&D. • The 6000 members of SID are professionals in all of the technical and business disciplines that relate to display research, design, manufacturing, applications, marketing, and sales. SID invites you to join us in developing and manufacturing the displays for the 21st century, and applying them to exciting information, telecommunications, medical, commercial, government, entertainment, and consumer products.

  3. SID - Society for Information Display • There are 12 local US chapters (Major area LA, Bay Area, NW, NE….) with monthly meetings in three regions (Americas, Europe and Asia). • The US and Europe have many aerospace and systems companies and many Asia companies provide display components and manufacturing. • The Annual International Symposium and Exhibits are in the US on the West or East coast. The 2008 Symposium will be at the LA Convention Center in May. • The SID LA Chapter has had joint meetings with SMPTE where topics of common interest are covered.

  8. LCD Improvements • Viewing angle • Response time • Backlight life • Larger sizes • Higher resolutions • Power reductions - achieved by dimming the backlight based on content • Contrast improvements - achieved with local dimming of LED backlights • Motion blur - by increase refresh rate of the panel at 120hz • Color gamut - can be increased with RGB LED backlights

  9. LED Backlights

  10. LED Local Dimming

  11. Motion Blur • What is Motion Blur? • Motion Blur is an artifact on a display when motion like a panning of a camera or scrolling of a picture as view by the eye. • The blur is at an intensity transition. Blur is caused by the LCD response time and hold type drive of panel.

  12. Motion Blur

  13. Motion Blur

  14. Motion Blur • To reduce Motion Blur the backlight at pulsed at 60 Hz but at reduce brightness • Driving the panel at 120 Hz with an interpolated frame is used without the reduce brightness.

  16. OLED Displays • Sony has started a limited production of am 11” OLED TVs in December and demonstrated a 27” panel at CES • Samsung has also demonstrated 14” and 31” panels produce very impressive picture quality • Organic LED displays are emissive were there is not backlight and can produce products that are very thin or flexible. OLED displays have been used in cell phones and cameras • There are many mass production and life issues that must be resolved before OLEDs will be a serious contender with LCDs

  17. Sony in a statement issued in Tokyo said it began mass production of the XEL-1 in September. The company has been selling OLED panels for mobile phones since 2004. The first TV to go on sale in Japan will be an 11-inch model with a screen 3 millimeters thick, The Wall Street Journal reported. The set would cost about $1,700. OLED screens have brighter pictures, higher contrast, and better color than seen on today's LCD and plasma screens, analysts say.
